Thief 4 vs. The Dark Mod - by Bulgarian_Taffer

:laff: no worries, you'll be seeing more of me!
And yes, back to the topic:
I have high hopes for TDM - Thief fans from this very forum are making it, and the screenshots/videos look very promising. Can't go wrong methinks.
T4 is more of a loose cannon... we might get anything. 'Hope for the best, but expect the worst' comes to mind :erm:

Because The Dark Mod is traditional, it has chance to please the good ol' taffers who don't like to see innovations
Certainly does. The feel is just right and then you realise that it's actually much more advanced than the Dark Engine ever was, but in the right ways - the lighting, the physics, the movement, the objects.

As long as the very basics (blackjacking, movement, combat, mantling) are solid, I'll embrace the Dark Mod the day it comes out for actual public release. :D
Its sad that Deadly Shadows has knocked my expectations down so far :laff:

Gotta say though, I'm slightly dissapointed that EM have yet to announce their intention to use the DarkMod tool set.

A group of volunteers beating out a professional company? That would definitely make people wonder who messed up their game.
One thing I've learned working on TDM for (nearly) five years is that the difference between amateurs and professionals (relative to game design) is not as significant as people tend to think. Oddity's models, for example, are as good as anything I've seen in a professional game.
Also, the amateurs have the advantage of not having to worry about budgets, deadlines, and commercial success. We're designing TDM to appeal to a very specific audience: fans of T1/2. I suspect EM's goal for T4 is something different, so I don't know that we can judge both by the same standard of success.

The beta-release will be ready before the end of the year, and a good deal sooner if we don't hit any snags.

This is why I'm very impatient to buy Doom 3 and try the mod... Actually, I think I'm awaiting it with even more passion than the release of Thief 4...
And I'm looking forward to try to create my own Dark Mod FMs.

The power of the Dark Mod will be that everyone will be able to make of it what they like, eventually. To begin with, any gameplay elements will be modifyable, but eventually even improvements to the engine, physics, sound, anything will be possible after Carmack makes the engine open source.
An editor with T4? Possibly, but even if there is, it won't be as open.

Very interesting...
Now I'm almost sure I'll buy Doom 3 :D It's worth it - even though I'm buying it only for the mod - I won't play the game.

I only bought it for TDM, although I did end up playing it all the way through out of curiosity. The later levels give you a flavour of what could be achieved with TDM.
I also bought UT just for TUT
