Edit - I was reminded of Guillermo del Toro, who famously produces alternating movies between those to sell well, and those he makes to please his cinematic aesthetic. Maybe game developers could do this? Or is there not enough slack in the system to allow?
An actor is largely independent from publishers and the like. Especially someone like Guillermo del Toro can pretty much pick what he wants to act in, without having to starve. There are a number of actors who take similar approaches. Contrary to that, a game developer or studio is usually under contract by one publisher, who wants a product they can sell. And it's not like the studio can just change their publisher like that. It's where they get their money from. If some studios were able to develop the game they want, and then sell it to the highest bidding publisher, without being financially dependent on one in the development phase - which is the closest analogy to the above acting scenario - the gaming world might look a bit different.

Hmm. You certainly seem to fall into the first category as far as Thief is concerned. The negativity in your posts is exemplary, and I personally find it very destructive, as stated previously. But I didn't see anyone put up these categories. I do see a lot of linear thinking and a lot of narrow-mindedness. Myself, I certainly have my opinions, but I refuse to cement them in at this point in time. I watch and wait. What you are doing is basically not allowing yourself to have at least a little bit of optimism. I have learned that if you always expect the worst, that's exactly what you get.
My mind isn't set at all about Thief 4. I'm currently acting negatively since I haven't seen anything I could react to otherwise yet. I'm sure I will though eventually. And it'll be back to "van HellSing is a raving eidos fanboy!" then, I can assure you.
Also, you're confusing Guillermo Del Toro with Benicio Del Toro ;)

I enjoyed T1, I loved T2 and I didn't think T3 was a disappointment at all. Despite the shortcomings of the game I personally think Ion Storm were on the right track. And I am sorry to say so, but narrow minds don't get any slack from me.
Call it narrow, I prefer to call it cautious.

Draft status? Have you been paying attention? They're selling it on merchandise and using it for promotion. lol A draft status logo wouldn't have gone into the market. Don't be naive.

Basically they are coming here and saying 'Thief 4 will be shit', not in that many words though. It's the kind of destructive negativity that would make me sick if I had to dwell on the thought for an extended amount of time.
...and on the other end of the stick, the developers are saying...Thi4f will be 'THE SHIT'. People are allowed to hang on the side of caution. I was a moderator on the Ion boards during T3 development. There was a lot of 'lip service' to appease the fans...but when the game came out, we learned that all the marketing speak was just meant to keep the fans quiet about the short comings. So if many of us perceive the same things to be happening again...it's just from being burned already. If you don't like it...don't read it.

I think what this community needs to do is cut the developers some slack. Hang in there, play TDP, TMA and all the fan missions you can get hold of, and when the game comes out, we can all form our own opinion. If it is crap, we will know soon enough. But don't pretend to know what you can't know by any reasonable logic.
Well, I don't think anyone has any hard formed opinions just yet....they're just burned. I'm happy you thought Ion Storm was on the right track, but I don't think they were at all. Not with the silly development choices they made right from the beginning that hindered the game.

So, New Horizon, what's your vision about the Dark Mod? What will happen?

I would prefer if a T4 vs. TDM thread did not exist, to be perfectly honest. The two are going to be very different.
With The Dark Mod we've approached the original games with deep respect, but at the same time we haven't slavishly replicated everything they did. Our approach has been to stay as close to the spirit of the core gameplay as we could, and enhance it where it was needed. We want it to feel like the next step in what LGS would have done with Thief.
We refuse to violate Eidos IP, so that's a weakness in the eyes of some players. I think it is also a strength in that it frees mappers to create more freely within the world we've created.
Thief 4 has to be commercially viable. I just don't know if they'll have the freedom to make a Thief game that takes the same risks the original games took. Time will tell. I hope they do it well and surprise the hell out of us all.

Considering TDM was started pretty much as a knee-jerk reaction to TDS, I find this statement somewhat ironic ;)

Uf... why? I love comparing games. I have not created this thread with intention to offend the Dark Mod developers or Eidos Montreal.

A good idea! Too bad it's not Thief... because :

I hope the Dark Mod will give me a possibility to create my own world - I mean, my own my character (the Thief) with his own personal story. My only trouble is that I'll have to avoid mentioning Thief-related stuff - Hammerites, Mechanists, Garrett, even Burricks!

Er, I think there's no problem with mentioning them as you're basically creating your own FMs within TDM - TDM itself did not come with them originally. I'm not really sure how this works - can anyone better informed confirm/deny what I said?

We've been saying all along. You can't legally use Eidos intellectual property within TDM. Nobody is stopping someone from doing it, but it's illegal.
