I'm pretty sure we're all united in wanting him back.
I haven't heard any fan say otherwise.
But they are sticking with the actor they have chosen so we may as well give him a chance.
EM will be introducing the voice of Garrett in more detail soon.

While I think it's probably going to be futile (:(), you guys have my silent approval (;)), if you wish to do so. I probably wouldn't convince you otherwise.
Start a petition, there's still at least a year of time before the game gets published. Hey, we can hope. (Alternate voicepack DLC, anyone ?)
But either way, I'm also open to the new actor.

As much as I want to be a Thief purist and have EM use all the same voices, etc, I won't let that stand in my way of playing in the Thief universe again just because it doesn't match up exactly with what I've known the past 14 years. :sly:
I am extremely excited for this to be released. I think it's going to be awesome and I'm just glad they're not letting the franchise die. :thumb:

Thief steals stuff in old city. Franchise saved.

It sounds more like an artistic decision than anything. There's absolutely nothing stopping them from using his voice alongside someone else's stuntwork and motion captures. It's sorta like Pixar not being able to get Craig T. Nelson to play Mr. Incredible because he wasn't actually capable of picking up a bus.
Well, nothing stopping them except their reasoning that it wouldn't work well since Russell wasn't doing the full body motion acting. I do think it is kinda silly though really, because no one would really be able to tell unless you're in third person that Garrett's voice doesn't match the facial animation and even then facial animation has never looked completely natural when it comes to syncing with the voices. And actually, while I'm typing up this post I just thought of something else. They could probably just have Russell in the room as the body actor is doing his thing and try to sync up his voice with the other actor.

Why do you you need a "body actor" for the main character if it's a first person game?
OK, for the cutscenes, maybe? So you're talking about what, 5 or less for the game? I'm sorry, that's incredibly weak. Using the original voice for such an iconic character should have far higher priority than whatever their "body actor" needs are for a few cutscenes. I was kind of joking when I said they'd come up with a weak excuse for not using Russell (such as confusing him with one of his other VO roles), but man, this is much worse, and fairly pathetic.
Bad move EM. You should have just said he was "busy."

And during the motion capture video for the cutscenes/conversations, the mocap actor is shown performing Garrett's lines and his face is being recorded, so either he was also the voice-actor, or he was going to be replaced, the former of which is apparently what did happen. The mocap was more important than the actor's ability to sound like Garrett.
Brethren, the game was made mostly for 3rd-Person, and was dialed back to 1st-Person only in the last half of development.

Or just come in later, watch the recordings, and say his lines in sync with the actions. There's no good technological reason why they can't do what's people in the computer animation business have been doing for years and years already. Either it's some weird artistic thing, where the devs want the bodies to match the voices (kinda like what they did with the previously mentioned LA Noire), or NH is right, and they don't want to hire two people to play Garrett because it cuts into their hooker and cocaine funds.
I do have to add in that I'm not totally against an new Garrett. Disappointed a little bit, sure. But I'm not going to boycott the game because of it. Let's assume for a second that EM aren't a bunch of corporate whores out to rape our favorite games for a quick buck. Yeah. I know. Crazy. What the hell, me?
Instead, let's assume that they're a bunch of smart and talented folks out to make their version of what they think would be a good updated Thief. They have their own ideas of what could make an interesting Thief. It might not necessarily sync up with our ideas 100%, but they're doing what they love for a series of games they loved previously.
Think about this for a second. Would you want all these people to make a game they're passionate about, or would you want them to retread the old series' ground as closely as possible. A series that's already had a satisfactory conclusion storywise? Instead of making the game they want and think we might like, they play it conservative and make the game we want.
Now there's always something to be said about listening to your fanbase, but you also need to be able to do what you want to do. Most of the time, doing more of the latter rather than the former ends up netting you a better product. Yes, it will make some people mad. Some of your fanbase will hate it simply because it's not a true to the nuts and bolts expansion of what they know. But others might be surprised by the new stuff. The tweak to the old formula. If the end results are good, then the effort was worth.
And that's what's most important here. If it ends up being good. I don't expect it to be Thief as we know it. Everything we've seen shows it's going to be a little bit different. It's gonna have some of the same characters, some the same factions, about the same settings, but all with a different take on them. It's an entirely different set of artists, so I don't expect it to be exactly the same. Though as long as they take the right amount of inspiration from LGS, and it's true to the spirit of Thief...and it's
good...I think I'll be happy.

And oddly enough, this excuse pretty much is another disappointment... I was hoping for a game, based heavily on monologues with some first person cutscenes, where control is rarely taken from player. That worked well in Dishonored and pretty much all of the Valve games... This seems like much more cutscenes based storytelling, than I'd ever wanted from Thief.:tsktsk:

that's the final proof:
old school method beats new development way 1 - 0
