Renz', these smart people really did just decide that the mocap was more important than the voice and all that comes with it. But if you need to go out of your way to justify it, don't expect anyone to follow you there. Stop equating people's concerns with staying in the past, dammit. You do yourself and everyone a disservice, and are just aiding and abetting the money-makers.
If the game ends up being an absolutely horrible travesty to the Thief name, with linear levels, constant cutscenes, and a new bad ass 'tude, I'll come on here and personally say I was a complete idiot for believing it could've been anything else, and deserve to be smacked about sneered at with utter contempt. I'll deliver my apology in bold all cap letters, and petition the admins to make a custom title for me: "dum".
But if it ends up being an interesting new take on the old canon, and stays true to the spirit of Thief, you have to film yourself eating an old gym sock (you can cut it up into pieces for easier digesting).
And if we're both wrong, and it ends up being an attempt to stay true to Thief, but falls short and ends up being kinda mediocre, well...I guess we both cry.

Sense makes sense.

I get their reasoning but it's not sound.
Stephen Russell should definitely be Garrett's voice (even if EM's actor doesn't sound bad to me). If Bioshock infinite can have a person do the Motion capture and another the voice acting why can't Thief?
Stephen is a professional and probably can make the voice fit the game well again

The only really good reason I can think of is because it sounds like they're using a setup like this...

Professional though he may be, if he doesn't match the cadence, inflections, and everything to the facial animations perfectly, it could end up looking like a bad dub job. They're not recording the lines then animating the faces to the voices this time. It's the other way around.
It's pretty thin, but there is some justification behind it. Some.
Kuuso on 3/4/2013 at 00:55
I get their reasoning, since the mo-cap they're using is a bit like filming an action movie so the actor has to act with his body as well (face included).
But as I see it, the real reason why Steven is not Garrett is the fact that they redesigned Garrett to be possibly younger and a bit different than before. This coupled with the fact that Russell is much older now than back at the day and you can probably hear it in his voice. Since the game is a reboot of sorts with a different twist on the world of Thief it's ok by me.
I do get why people are upset though. Garrett is not like 007 or Doctor Who that is natural for the actor to change. Thief's narration coupled with an unique character made him quite special. Taking the same character, but changing aspects of him is tricky business and could go badly. I myself need to hear more to say anything more about it than I'm reservedly looking forward for it.

According to the blog article, they changed the voice to serve the mocap. It's as lame as TRON Legacy going from intricate circuitry to bland stickman lines for the sole purpose of implementing real glowing lines on the actors to illuminate their surroundings and each other pre-production, but without even the cost concerns. Stubborn aesthetic choices over substance.

We don't know how much style over substance it is until we see the results and hear how the new guy sounds.
I'm taking Kuuso's stance on the matter. I want to see and hear more before I make a final judgement call and declare it awesome/terrible. What I've seen so far is different, yes, though not half bad, and not nearly enough to know what it's really gonna be like.

If only they had covered Garrett's face with some sort of stupid mask in their new game... rendering considerations of lip movements matching up moot...
oh wait. they did. and still ignored what they said they knew to be important 4 years ago, and thumbed their noses at the actor who created this character. and flipped off the entire fan community.
this motion capture nonsense is just that, pure BS.
and as for banning people for calling out apologists? If the shoe fits... how about just once, ONCE a fan community speaks with one voice and gets behind something, puts our foot down, and tries to get something changed? Must there ALWAYS be corporate bootlickers? Every time?
Look at my recent posts to see that I am no die-hard purist, I said many things to be encouraging and positive about this new game when the article in Game Informer came out... tried to encourage people to keep an open-mind, just be grateful a new game is being made at all...
Kicking Russell to the curb is too much. Stand up for yourselves people, or at least keep your mouth shut if you can't. New Horizon, you have my axe!
As I suggested earlier they should at least allow us to pay Russell's fee and associated recording costs for them to provide a Russell voice DLC... SOMETHING.
