Stephen Russell was in the building and they kicked him out because they didn't believe he could match the lip-sync of the motion capture actors?
Unforgivable.
Please God, let this be the worst april fools joke in history...

As I read further it just gets worse. Motion capture? Why would you need to motion capture a thief that shouldn't be seen in the first place?! Oh yes...concentrating too much on 3rd person and fancy cut-scenes... BIG surprise there.
Thief is like a wheel and there is a reason that round is the preferred shape. You break into interesting places, nix all the goodies while gathering information maybe crack a skull or three or eight and leave. In the interim you sell off the loot for hard cash and marinate on what you've learned and decide what to do next. Lather, rinse, repeat a dozen or so times and you have a nice game.
The original formula was so freakin' good that even amateurs could take the tool set and create something of considerable worth.
In the meanwhile it seems the devs have taken 3-4 years just to figure out what kind of game they want to make. If they wanted to make a proper Thief game it seems to me we would have had it sometime in 2011.
Oh well. I guess we'll see what we will see.:erg:

Yeah, but you would need to make that 200 million dollars back. That's like 3 million copies. And if you want to make a profit on that (which anyone dropping that much money will) that's even more copies. You need mass appeal. Hence things change, edges get filed off, etc. You are entirely correct, of course - indie games with smaller budgets and less worry about shifting huge numbers are where the really interesting stuff takes place. It's like movies. Unless you are an eccentric billionaire who doesn't care about losing millions of dollars, high-budget entertainment HAS to appeal to a broader demographic. Bigger budget, blander product, lowest common denominator, etc.
I'm kind of talking myself out of Thief here. I guess realistically I'm not expecting it to be super-brilliant. But it's really depressing watching lots of people here basically bioshock themselves so much they're not going to be able to enjoy it at all because they already have a diamond-hard list of (often really, really trivial) reasons it sucks before they've even played it. Heads up, yes, it will definitely suck if you are already looking to pick it apart.
Repeating myself.
Gargh.
You speak as if minecraft doesn't have mass appeal? :P
When I mentioned the roguelike I wasn't talking about a single stand alone game. I don't think you could ever put 200 million into a standard roguelike even if you wanted to.

Minecraft is to kids these days what Lego bricks were to us. Everyone except for Goldmoon loves Minecraft. :P

So it's less about the technology and more just blatant cronyism (Look how many asscreed devs are on this train). Lovely.

Not to add to the hysteria, but I'm really bothered that they don't see the value of incorporating something that has no bearing on gameplay or graphic presentation for the sake of nostalgia. If that's their philosophy, then they bloody well need to get rid of the Burrick head in that tavern screenshot. I call bullshit. Thief is primarily about embodying the character of Garrett, and vets strongly associate him with SR's voice. Newbies won't know the difference, so how in the world would there be an (alleged) disconnect? Have you ever played a new game and thought, "Hmmm...that voice doesn't fit the character?" No - you accept the voice as being part of a character that you're getting to know. The whole thing makes no sense from an artistic standpoint or a marketing standpoint.

Holy crap that's blatant.
Only real differences I see are skin tone, the mouth furrows, and the thickness of the eyebrows (ignoring the scar change).... otherwise they're pretty much exactly the same
