I
really doubt that EM did it just to annoy the "true fans" and declare a war against them/us... these conspiracy theories fit better in the Deus Ex forum.
I dont' think anyone's saying that - I think they just decided since it's a reboot, they want to go with a new voice, and they ended hiring someone they're familiar with.

I got to say that I'm totally with Renzatic on this, his post earlier was spot on. This isn't a Thief 4
Anticipation forum anymore, this is more like a Thief 4
Hatred forum at the moment, with many of the "true fans" venting their anger. And I find that pretty sad... I joined this forum because of Thief and I've always liked it here, but this constant negativity and twisting of things is getting quite disheartening.
No doubt this thread is filled with negativity - just look at the thread title. Stephen Russell is a god around here, and people are going to be upset. But I think the last couple of posters who've stated that the entire forum is negative and full of hatred are wrong. There's a lot of discussion going on, some heated, but it includes both positive and negative. Whenever you have this scenario, the really negative comments stick out in people's minds and overly influence their opinion. It's just like when dethtoll and SE come in and accuse ThiefGen of being a bunch of pathetic losers, they're really only focusing on comments from a few diehard extremist Thief fans (you guys know who you are).
As as example, look at the "Thief 4 Concept Art" (6 pages) and "Thief 4 Will Be Awesome Because" (6 pages) thread, there's some good stuff in there. The "Official Trailer" thread is a mixed bag but there's some positive stuff in there as well. We've got some polls going on, trying to gauge everyone's opinion. Part of me just says after several years of absolutely no information, we suddenly have a flood of info and a lot of people are just overreacting and maybe acting too emotionally. It'll smooth out after a while.

As I said on Reddit, F*** them ! Stephen Russell is the Al Pacino of voice over artists ! Note he is a VOICE artist, he is NOT a sodding gymnast ! I don't care that he can't perform somersaults whilst wearing a mo-cap suit ! EIDOS, you fu*king suck !!

People just need to calm down and stop being overly drammatic. No need to leave this forum nor attacking others personally.

I just realised why there are no supernatural enemies or burricks in the game, Eidos Montreal had trouble finding real-live(undead?) zombies and dwarf dinosaurs to do mocap and voice acting.
Nonsense... they were just asking too much.

I see. So, if we don't make giddy, positive 'omg I can't wait for this!' posts as though we all have unicorns and rainbows shoved up our arses then we shouldn't post at all? And here I thought everyone was entitled to their own opinons, even if others don't agree with them.
Eh? My own posts are hardly all rainbows and unicorns either. I've expressed my opinions about things that I don't particularly like, and without a doubt there'll be even more stuff that I won't like as we get more information. But why concentrate only on the negatives? Is there genuinely
nothing in the new Thief that you've liked (apart from the graphics, I remember you admitting that the game looks good) so far? I find that quite hard to believe, and if there truly is nothing, then I wonder what you're even expecting from the new game.
The way I see it, Thief 4 is EM's
new take on the Thief series... not exactly the same as the old ones, they've changed some little things here and there, and a few bigger things (new voice actor, Focus feature, etc), but if they stay true to the roots, there's a chance that Thief 4 could be an awesome game! Or it could be a total disaster. It's way too early to say, so I think it's also kinda silly to jump into any conclusions just yet, when we still haven't got that much information about the game itself. Right now the thing that worries me the most is the third person action, but I can live even with that if the game is an enjoyable experience... But perhaps the third person bits will be optional, that would be ideal. The developers could possibly listen to some of our wishes, but I don't think that many of the hate-filled messages that wouldn't pass most profanity filters are very helpful... at least I would ignore them if I was a part of the dev team.

I
certainly hope so. ;)

No, so far the only thing that half-way appeals to me are the graphics and even they are suspect. I don't like Garrett's new look (will I get in trouble if I say he looks like a deranged Ninja?), I don't like the whole third person thing, or wall-hugging, or timed missions/levels, or Garrett's new voice, or the fact that EM apparently only pays lip-service to Garrett's past relationship with the Keepers (as if the first three games never happened), or the fact that it seems that even with the graphics EM has blatantly borrowed from AC & Dishonored, or the new '
complicated and complex system' that replaces the light bar (another one of those 'it's not broken so DON'T FIX IT' things, imo). The RPS article mentions how '
Garrett scrambled across rooftops, traversing City blocks at an incredible rate,' so imo that's got me wondering as well - is everything Garrett does in high speed and/or third person if you're not actively looking at the loot or wielding a weapon? And I still don't know what the hell 'Focus Ability' means (zooming?). And why go with an utterly predictable, formulaic plot, '
the narrative will throw Garrett on a collision course with an industrialist Baron who has taken political control of The City, using The Watch, his personal army of thugs.' instead of continuing with the Keeper arc?
Sorry Tomi. I just can't generate any enthusiasm for T4 at this point. What was I expecting? I'm sure if I did some soul-searching I'd find I just wanted an updated version of TMA. Yeah, I know, so very sad, but there it is. Maybe if EM releases a demo first there might be a chance that my mind could be changed, but so far every time I try to garner enthusiasm, I read, hear, or see something new from EM about T4 and my anticipation falls right back down into apprehension. I really did want to love this game but EM keeps ruining things. I find nothing compelling, nothing that makes me want to go right out and spend $60 on T4. I'd really, honestly love it if EM could change my mind, but so far it's a no-go for me.

Most vocal people here aren't even planning on playing the game, don't have the hardware or are completely closed off from gaming culture, or possibly from any kind of reality.
This is extremely condescending. I want to like this game, but the EM does not seem to understand what they are working with.

Those who make those 2-3 million copies sold for particular title don't come from forums like this one.
This is actually the problem, where studios and publishers are trying to make the next super smash hit by appealing to everyone and sell 10 million copies, and making a mediocre title in the end that kills the series.

Hmm. So you're saying that you don't want a more realistic lighting system, where your enemies and objects leave dynamic shadows where you can hide? I think that's what they mean by the more complex system, anyway. It will probably still be just as easy to use in action, but there's a lot more complicated mathematics behind it (because the dynamic shadows obviously make things more complicated). Or is it just the fact that the traditional light gem is gone that bothers you? One of the articles described a similar system in Thief 4 (it's just a light orb instead of a light gem!) so surely that shouldn't be a big deal, even though I know that you ladies love your gems and other jewelry. :p

Well, at least you're being honest there. And fair enough, I can see where you're coming from, but I'd much rather see something refreshingly new (which is not the same as "totally different") than the same old stuff with nicer graphics and a few more gadgets to play with. And what exactly is an "updated version" anyway? How much can they update things before it becomes a whole new game instead of a new version? It's pretty hard to draw the line, if you know what I mean. I grew a bit tired with the very predictable AI in the classic Thief for example, but "only" updating the AI would totally change how the whole game works. Obviously updating the graphics is a major challenge as well - how is it even possible to capture the same feeling and the atmosphere of the older games, when we're all expecting Thief 4 to look great and somewhat realistic, whereas the graphics were never the strongest point of the older games?
The developers have got to make a lot of compromises like that, and of course everyone won't be pleased with all of them. And yes, then there are certain things that are particularly hard for us "old school" Thief fans to accept, third person view for example... I can understand if something like
that is a deal-breaker for some people, but didn't you say that you liked DE:HR? Why would Thief 4 totally suck if it has some third person stuff, when DE:HR doesn't? Come on Dia, you can still enjoy the new Thief despite of some of its inevitable flaws if you stop thinking that it
has to be an updated version of TMA, not everything new has to be something bad.
Open your arms and embrace the new Garrett!
(okay, that was probably a bit too much! :p)

Heh. Gotta call you out for this one, cuz...you know...Dishonored. It sold a ton, and was made by both a couple of people here, and by a studio that started out making games in the first place because they were hardcore Ultima Underworld fans, and were disappointed there weren't more games like it.
Their biggest difference is that they're probably a little less conservative about games than some people are here currently.
