What I've been wondering, maybe as a way to fix this mess, is there an audio filter program that can modify voices that we could use eventually to change Romano's voice so he sounds more like Russell?
Seriously now....this has any point, except for nostalgia?
Getting Russell to voice act Garrett makes sense - he's Garrett...
but getting Mr. Giovanni Auditore without Italian accent and making him sound like someone else is kind of pointless. He is already trying to sound like Garrett anyway.

Not nostalgia, familiarity. Give him a different name and the problem evaporates. It's not just the voice. It's not just one thing. It's a chain of things going back to 2008 and the lame decisions behind them. It's the same old thing that plagues Alien 3/4, Terminator 3/4, the Star Wars prequels, The Thing prequel. All that work and yet missing damn near everything what endeared us to the originals, 'cause it's not about creatures and a hunt and a character with the same name. At least in Aliens, it's entirely a different movie, and even though the aliens themselves suck, everything else works well enough. If Stephenie Meyer had written the final Harry Potter book, there'd be people praising her for fixing what was wrong with the other books, and calling people nostalgic, etc.

You could try this:
(
http://www2.research.att.com/~ttsweb/tts/demo.php)
STEP 1: Choose
"Rich ........ US English" in the Voice & Language box. (
"Charles ....... UK English" is pretty good too if you prefer an English accent... and you can even have a female Garrett if you like!!)
STEP 2: Type
"Inside at last" (or any other famous Garrett quote) in the text box.
Click the
"Speak" button and enjoy your new Garrett voice.
When Thief 4 is released, you can use this for all of Romano Orzari's dialogue in the game, save the files on your computer, and play them as you hear them.
P.S. This also works for the Spanish, German, and French translations of the game!!

One problem evaporates but another appears.

That's always a real concern. That's why you don't kid yourself, and why you don't try and pass off junk as kewl, especially when it's an obvious band-aid fix. Your product sucks? Add boobs and/or explosions!

Well, for me the problem would be that I could no longer play as Garrett (not the identity of some new protagonist), which in my opinion is pretty important in a Thief game.

Random_Taffer suggested something interesting to me today. He was wondering if part of the reason they dropped Russell is related to the fact that they're also moving away from "taffer" and to using real curse words. I mean, if Stephen Russell DID voice Garrett and he had the line, "Some people in this city have too much godd4mn money for their own fu*#ing good", wouldn't it sound a bit odd to you? Think it sounded odd to them too? I wonder if they went with someone else just to avoid that kind of... awkwardness.

Good point Yandros (& RT). Hearing SR swear, I mean really swear would definitely give me pause. Not that I'm such a prude or anything, but it just doesn't fit with the Garrett we all know & love. Iirc, I think 'damn' was about the strongest a swear word that Garrett ever used.

And that is
exactly why we
aren't happy! We don't see/hear
Garrett in Thief[4], we see/hear an imposter! Now you, too, are so close to understanding where we are coming from. There is less Garrett the more we learn of this character, and there is less gameplay opportunity to control this character
our way, using
Garrett's tools! The name is not enough! I am not Tomi!

There are probably LOTS of great cutscenes and slo-mo takedown scenes, though. :ebil:
I'm beginning to think that in another 5 years or so, all video games will be is one cutscene and/or takedown scene after another, in between which we'll all have maybe four or five minutes of actual gameplay.
In the third person.
