The reboot was called Thief, not Thief 4, so wouldn't the sequel to the reboot have to be called Thief 2? I can't see that causing any confusion.

If they will ever do a sequel to Thief (4) I hope they find a title for it that doesn´t confuse half of the dudes who perhaps haven´t heard much of Thief before (so Thief 2: the mental age is ruled out :D) I have already seen people get confused before Thief (4) in some forums and on steam (mainly because Thief: Deadly shadows doesn´t have a number)

I don't feel bad at all. It's a privately owned game franchise. They can do whatever they want with it, and personally I would rather see it continue than cease. Not only that it's my favorite franchise ever, so I'll still support a Thief 5: Garrett Takes Manhattan , over a Deus Ex 7, or a Final Fantasy 44, or a Tomb Raider 12 any day of the week.
