Thief and the old days... - by Naked

Some 9 years ago when I first I discovered Thief I said to myself "This is it, it doesn't get any better than this." That referring to the overall story, gameplay and immersion factor of the game. And guess what? It didn't get better, for me that is. I personally believe that no game has truly ever rivaled the Thief series in any category for any gaming factor.
Perhaps my strong perception of this game stems from a nostalgic feeling to be 13 again, dying to get home from school to play Thief. The very first time I played Cragscleft would become a sacred and cherished experience for me several years down the road. There are just some moments in life that can only be had once, and for me Thief has taken up some of those one time moment slots.
Anyone with a similar experience?

One gaming moment that has never been equaled for me was being tricked by those four hallways with doors at the end in "The Sword". Man, that was just mind bewildering!

Mine would be the first time i explored the Old Quarter to reach the Cathedral. It was late at night and i was dead tired (yet still playing of course). The type of tired where you start to hear things and hallucinate. Anyway, i finally saved (or maybe finished, too long ago to remember) and once i went to bed, all i could hear were the voices of those Priest Apparitions as i fell asleep. Those bizarre backward voices. Cool as shit. Yep, that has always stuck in my mind as one of those "cool moments in gaming".
Wait... is that a sign of psychosis?? :wot:

And that cutscene after RTC, I don't think I slept very well that night...

The thing that makes Thief REALLY special for me is the multitude of ways that you can exploit the Dark Engine to stack crates, land on frogs from miles high, and things like that.

No other game, for me anyway, will be like Thief.

I only play four games.
MM6, Wiz8, Thief: The Dark Project, and "Thief: II" for my first person shooter cravings. :p
I haven't upgraded my computer since the big 2004 letdown. Until the next true simple pure masterpiece surfaces if it ever does, that's it for GMD.

Thief works on so many levels for me, that I cannot imagine any gaming experience will ever surpass it. Simply unparalleled, and I've yet to see the end of the rewards I'm reaping from the games.

If only "S" meant "Sneaker", or "Skullthumper", or "Stealer".
