Ha, I thought this might stir someone up. Regarding Thief 'just' being a game and why make it into something it is not... isn't most religion just based around the Bible or Quran - basically books of myths by someone or a group of people who had too much time on their hands?
Okay, so perhaps 'religion' wasn't the right word. Perhaps I was pointing more towards an 'inner circle' if you will, like the Freemasons or something.
And don't take all this too seriously people, come on! You'd think I was asking for world domination. Religion, in any form, is just a set of beliefs and practices based on what, centuries old texts and stuff? Why not create a religion based on something we can all identify with, and at the end of the day - actually know exists!?
Also bear in mind that more and more stuff from games and film, at least regarding technology, is now becoming reality. So it's not as if all content of games is just dismissed as being a 'game'. I also thought you lot might have more respect for the developers, I mean let's face it, they don't come like Thief anymore do they?
This isn't my expression of fandom either, as I rarely even play Thief nowadays. I just thought I'd ask to see if anyone else had even had the thought.

Well, for religion to have any relevance within a society, it's gotta have something to say about crime and punishment.
From the Cragscleft briefing:
"the liars were made to feast upon the hands of the thieves,
and the thieves were made to ingest the tongues of their liar brothers"
Seems like a good start, and would certainly show those other "progressive" religions a thing or two about how we taffers like to roll.

Look. I'd normally post a 'god this is dumb' line or two but, okay. Fine. Ignoring the fact that you've almost said yourself that you're trolling, here you go: the factions in Thief are patterned after real-world religions as social commentary of a sort. Your Hammerites being examples of extremism - you know, like the old Catholic church of mediaeval times. And the Pagans being... well, the Pagans. Each faction is exaggerated to the point of caricature when compared to its real-world counterpart. It's like making a
social comment.
To take any of that seriously - from the Keepers to everything else - is to so completely miss the point of the games that you might have bought the CDs at first only because you'd mistaken them for shiny plastic frisbees to throw at the dog.

I wasn't taking it seriously, but that's the point. It only works when you take it seriously, like Jediism. Otherwise it won't go further than a few posts on a message board. We need a few nutters to really take it to the next level. (
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ElJFYwRtrH4) These people can be the pagans though.

There probably are orders like the Keepers irl already. As for the Hammers, and Pagans, we already have the Catholic church on it's worst days, fundamentalist Christians, Jihad Muslims, and, well, Pagans.

It is closer to an era in history and fantasy than religion by itself. It has the feel of the 1500's europe with hints of astocracy and feudalism. Bows and Arrows with magic. The Builders are always talking about the master builder. This hints of Free Masonary which originated from Stone Masons of the middle ages. There is some speculation that the Knights Templar went underground when Prince Philip of France had a high ranking Templar (Grand Master Demolay) beheaded an ordered all Templars arrested. If I were to make a mission I would add some lore linking the Keepers to the secretive Templars of the 14th century. Maybe make a story about Garretts grandfather being chased into an underground world of Thief at night and stone mason by day.

I must be a horrible individual, but I always thought the Hammerites were basically good guys. :p Then again, I also think the Catholic Church has been basically good guys, so what do I know. :sly:

Karras and the Mechanists are far worse and more evil than the Hammers. Just saying
