I must be a horrible individual, but I always thought the Hammerites were basically good guys. :p Then again, I also think the Catholic Church has been basically good guys, so what do I know. :sly:
Good Guys who will cut Thieves hands off just for pleasure...... Okay, if you say so.

Why for pleasure. To feed the poor liars, obviously.

Sounds...................Islamac. Then again Thief has tones of the Crusades and Middle Eastern mythology.

I don't know if you're being serious, but I also believe that the good the Catholic Church has done overshadows the bad they've done. They've always been targeted by the ruling elite and by the business classes as the cause of all problems while the elite and the business classes merrily cause the problems. And people are only too happy to go along with it. :erg:

I don't see the connection with Hammerites and the Catholic Church. Catholic priests don't go walking around with great big hammers to knock the brains out of people. It is foolish to associate Thief to reality without keeping in mind it is indeed a phantasy story that borrows vague concepts from society and religion in general. The story in Thief borrows more from Free Masonary than the Catholic church. The "Master Builder" is a common term used by Free Masons all over the world. Keep....................................... "FNORD"............................... in mind with this thread.
Kolya on 4/11/2010 at 11:03
All those fnords and still no one makes the connection here?
Discordianism is a loosely connected set of philosophical concepts and views invented by writers (Wilson et al) from the 60s counter-culture movement. It is not a religion, although the texts like to give that impression, but by the very nature of its ideas it's actually an anti-religious intellectual joke and a deconstruction of how religion works to confuse people.
The thief universe is constructed very similarly. As has been noted it is a comment on religion, but it's not overt about it. In fact it creates a fascination with the religious groups depicted and draws you into their world.
Much like discordianism has been adapted (more or less) by people who are in on the joke (more or less), you can pursue and extend the Thief universe as a pseudo-religious concept without sacrificing it's core ideas. That is to keep it an comment on religious fanaticism and greed from an inside view. Basically, as long as you're still in on the joke, you can make Thief your religion as much as you like. And isn't that what you people do here anyway?
So go ahead and write the books we only have quotes of, wear robes, talk about the Builder in your everyday life and enter "Hammerite" as your religion in questionnaires. Just keep it fun. :)

OK I am officially a troll. Sorry about that.

's okay, Garr. Water under the bridge.

Forget everything I said about Thief as a 'religion'. How about anyone who's still a massive Thief fan and wants to be part of a close-knit community (like here), just call themselves a fraternity?
What would it be called? Something like Thief Alliance Forefathers? Sorry, couldn't resist having TAFFER as an acronym! ;)
