so someone has asked me about those weird Thief candles recently - basically, they emit light, but don't appear to be actually lit, there is no flame or anything, and they can't be doused in any way. this looks like one of those "we'll finish this later" LGS things. I can fix this relatively easily (already tried out the implementation in the (
http://www.ttlg.com/forums/showthread.php?t=141747) unified T1 demo and T2 Lost Alpha) in all TFix maps, but the question is,
should I? while this fixes an (obvious) anomaly, it
does change the gameplay a bit, as the player would be able to create darkness where he previously couldn't.

+1 to the question as such. :D
I personally would like to see the candles actually being there. And the player being able to disable their torches as well. It would broaden the decision-making in game imho. There is only so many water arrows you can carry.

If it wasn't extinguishable when the game shipped, it should not be made so now.

I'm against that.

they weren't (or rather, currently aren't) extinguishable, but if you examine them in Dromed, they definitely look unfinished - various props, various ways of emitting light etc, suggesting LGS was not sure what to do there. as the candles are used pretty scarcely (for example, the Assassins mission only has 5 chandeliers and 7 candles, if memory serves), they probably either forgot about it or just left it alone at some point for unknown reason (you would be very surprised just how much unfinished stuff is lurking around the supposedly final levels).
anyways, the poll will be there for quite a while (not planning to work on this before the summer), so I'll be able to get a pretty good idea about how many people would want this, and how many wouldn't (and how many actually care - if I were to sneak in the fix without letting anyone know, how long would it take for someone to actually notice, I wonder?).

Agreed, whats the harm in having more realism in missions and the game now that we have newdark etc.

Agreed.
What you can do with the lights around you can dramatically change the gameplay.
Up to the point that a mission can appear to be rubbish and way tooooo easy.
Having a separate updated model for mappers to use them, would be nice.
They can decide whetehr to use them - or not.

For purposes of keeping the gameplay the same, I feel that their functionality should remain the same. However, I would like to see little flames added anyway, for visual effect.

They could be those damned relighting birthday candles. :D

I was actually considering something similar (douse with waterstim, but self-relight after a very short while), but abandoned the idea, as I was not able to find a simple enough way of setting this up. also, it'd be wacky.

turns out it's perfectly possible to set them up this way and then control the extinguishability via the gamesys dml - so this can be made user configurable.
