Saw (
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PW3ZDh2Q2Mc&feature=user) this on youtube. Shows what seems to be a pagan getting insta-killed by a green, glowing orb of mist. I have seen the mist, and I have seen the guy die...I just always thought it was the campfire that killed him.
WTF is going on? Is that stuff deadly, and has anyone heard of this crap before?

Will o' the Wisp, meet gunsmoke.
Gunsmoke, meet Will o' the Wisp.
A "creature" found in all the Thief games. I'm surprised it killed the Pagan, though. In Deadly Shadows, the Wisps can cause damage, but in the earlier games, it was only a danger if it illuminated the shadows the player was hiding in.
In the earlier games it was called a will o' wisp (sic). The Pagan village in TMA was called Beck o' the Wills. In TDS they are called the Trickster's Flame, or the Fairy Spark.

For those who don't know, it's loosely based on a real natural phenomenon. It's also where the term "Jack o' Lantern" (Jack of the Lantern) came from.

This is a bit off topic (sorry) but had to share it here since you showed us the deadly shadows clip from youtube. After watching that clip, I saw a related video, and ended up finding this:

Nice.:cheeky: thanks. I wonder if he ever finished that?

Not likely:

The problem is, I'm too easily distracted. I think of too many interesting projects to work on, and start new ones before I finish the old ones (scuplting my own miniatures, designing a board game, writing a novel, etc.).
I've been thinking about the Lego movie from time to time and waiting for inspiration. I think I need to reduce the scope a bit from what I originally intended, but I'm trying to decide how to tie it all together. I feel like it needs a good ending (and it needs to build up the ending), but the way it is now it's more like a montage. I might just embrace the montage form and not attempt to cover an entire "mission" in real time.

Lego Technics (or whatever the name in English is) could make great Steampunk elements. Hehe...erm.

Maybe I never touched them (and why, after all it is bright and nasty) and never saw something like that on the video either, but it seems that you have...?!

Experimentally. I was observing the differences from the other games. In the first two games, since they don't cause damage, and you aren't in danger from the illumination unless there are AI that can see you, I allowed a TDS one to pass near me. I was in no danger of being seen, but I received damage. The warning against the Trickster's flame took on new meaning.

Hehe, maybe one could turn those things into elementals in T3Ed. :sly:

Funny...I've bever realized that the Wil'o'Wisp was responsible for that dead pagan... Especially since AFAIK those Fairy Fires don't "interact" with anyone else in the other missions.
And except for banishing my shadows, I've never had to come close to one of them or even accidentally bumped into one, which in most maps would be too much of a trouble.
So, I think it is strange that the Wisps actually physically hurt people, but it is even stranger that they would hurt a pagen who should be allies of a sort.
In the youtube movie, it seems that Garrett isn't hurt by the wisp although moving near/ through it, but that could just be the perspective of the video.
But then again it's nice to always find out new stuff about the Thief universe.
Btw, I think it's great that now they aren't made of metal anymore (ever hit one in TMA?)... that was just weird :cheeky:
