The 20th anniversary of Thief: Deadly Shadows (well, the North American release anyway) is exactly a year from today (May 25, 2024), and we are announcing the official start of the contest NOW!
We are doing things differently this year for a few reasons: Deadly Shadows' editing tools are tough to get into so we thought it would be a good idea to open the competition to Thief 1 and 2 as well by providing contestants with an optional pack of textures and sounds from the game. This means that this contest is open to Thief 1, Thief 2, Deadly Shadows as well as The Dark Mod!
Starting today, you have exactly one year to build a mission for Thief 1, 2, Deadly Shadows or The Dark Mod in the style of Deadly Shadows. Please read the detailed rules below. This year-long building period also includes beta-testing, so manage it carefully!
Rules:- The mission(s) can be for Thief 1, Thief 2, Deadly Shadows or The Dark Mod.
- Collaborations are allowed.
- Contestants can use any custom resource they want and are not limited to the Deadly Shadows resource pack.
- Contestants can submit more than one mission.
- Contestants can enter anonymously.
- The mission(s) can be of any size.
Dromed Startpack:Brethren has kindly created a (

Using this is allowed, as is the importing of small multibrushes (think small templates as opposed to large areas from an unreleased map). However, starting from an abandoned map or importing large areas from other maps is not allowed. Naturally this is on the honor system as we have no way of validating.

(Pagans 1, 2, 3 and 4 from TDS with their corresponding schemas)Note that TDM entries are forbidden to use this as per TDM rules.Mission themes and contents:There is no requirement from a theme or story viewpoint, however contestants might consider that many players may expect or prefer missions to be celebratory of Thief: Deadly Shadows in this respect: castles, manors, museums, ruins inhabited by Pagans and the like, with a balance of magic versus technology. This is entirely up to the authors, though, to follow or not - it is just mentioned here as an FYI and, while individual voters may of course choose to vote higher or lower based on this on their own, it will not be a criteria used explicitly in voting or scoring.

The archive must be named TDS20AC_yourmissionname.zip. Make sure your missions are tested before submitting them!
Voting period:The voting period will start on June 1st 2024 and end on September 1st 2024. Results will then be announced along with the unveiling of the identities of potential anonymous entrants, as well as the publishing of voters' comments.

Any chance to consider TDM missions for this contest? TDM development story is very intertwined with this game and if contestants are already able to make maps in other games it kind of makes sense to me.

This is really exciting. I've never played TDS fan missions so I'll try out a few over the year to prepare for the contest!

Great to see this, thanks skacky/Yandros. One other idea for authors - The (
https://www.ttlg.com/forums/showthread.php?t=129213) TDS City mission released by Child of Karras in 2009 could work as a good base for new authors (or veterans even) for their missions. The architecture of course couldn't be used, but there are models/textures/objects/sounds all set up in an editing environment, including a gamesys. I know CoK has openly stated in the past that the mission can be used as a base for anyone's Thief related projects.

If it's to be in the style of TDS we expect to see the use of climbing gloves rather than rope arrows and of course only a couple of walls within the whole map where you can use them. ;)
@ TDS City mission by Child of Karras. It's a faithful rebuild of the TDS city (Southquater, Stonemarket, Docks) but it was made prior to Newdark so are a number of bugs including that can mantle out of the map in 100's of locations, but Bad Hangover & Pestis Cruenta which were contest missions that used TDS City mission as a base were made after Newdark was released and are very much better maps to work with as most if not all the Newmantle issues were fixed in those maps.

The architecture in all of the maps you mentioned though is irrelevant, because it can't be used for the contest. You'd mainly use it for the assets and resources.
As an aside - I'm guessing any level with swimmable water will be disqualified from the contest.
