hmm TDS is indeed very underrated. Of course it has flaws and bugs, of course not everyone liked the changes, some things also annoyed me, but over all the game is awesome.
I loved the new graphics, especially the dynamic shadows. Yes, graphics are not everything, but the story was nice too and the missions, despite being too small, had nice details, realistic details.
But it was also too easy, the blackjack looked stupid, etc.
Everyone has own opinions about this game, mine is that it is a good game, not like TDP and TMA, but good in its own way.
But one thing really disturbs me: People always arguing about something this stupid. Of course it is ok to defend a preferred game or criticize a game for its flaws. But questioning the intelligence of a person based on a game is just insulting for everyone. May sound harsh, but that's how it is.
If you really dislike TDS then just don't play it. And if you really want a possible Thief4 going in a different direction, then organize the fanbase and talk to the developers. Shouldn't be impossible to convince them and the producers if there really is a market for such a game.
Fazit: TDS has disadvantages and flaws, especially for a TDP and TMA fan, but it is still a good and entertaining game, in my opinion of course.
ps: don't want to say that anyone insulted anyone, just feels like it could lead to something like that, which would be sad, we are after all all thief fans

Ok, back to my original question: WHAT IS WRONG WITH BODY AWARENESS IN 1st PERSON? Just out of curiosity...

Walk up to ledge, turn 90 degrees to the left, press the forward key, and find yourself strafing to the right instead of moving the direction you're looking.
Over the cliff you go, time to reload.
Mantle onto the pipes into the clocktower, try to walk across, only to inexplicably fall off of them instead.
Creep up to an alcove, then strafe sideways into the giant statue, thereby alerting the entire level.
Body awareness doesn't work so well when you're not actually aware of your body. You either have to constantly look down at your feet to figure out what direction you're actually facing, or switch to 3rd person (assuming a wall doesn't block the camera).
Body awareness may not be a bad thing in general, but T3's kwerky implementation forced you to stay conscious of it and game your motion to counteract it, especially when played in first persion.

TDS was the first Thief game I played and I loved it. I can't even begin to count the hours spent playing it, and that's without FMs.
I already owned TG and TMA for a few years, but had never opened the jewel cases. They were given to me as gifts and at the time, I wasn't interested, so I feigned surprise and promptly threw them in the closet.
Then one day, I got bored I guess so I dug out those games and started playing. It took some getting used to, being as I was used to TDS, but I quickly learned to love it.
TMA is my favorite of the series, though I love them all, despite any flaws and bugs.
I have to agree that having loading zones, killer water and no rope arrows in TDS really sucks, but it's no big deal. I love being able to explore the city at will.
My biggest problem with all 3 games is that Garrett seems to wear tap shoes on his missions. It would only be good sense to wear soft shoes in his line of work. I understand it was done as a measure of difficulty, but it's still silly.
I only have 2 real problems with TG and TMA. The fact that Garrett seems to throw away his equipment between missions is just absolutely stupid.
I can only hope there will be a T4. I also hope like hell that some company remakes the entire series with a new engine that runs great on today's hardware, but stays true to the maps and gameplay.

Have you actually read this thread? There are numerous comments on "body awareness".
Not to mention mine, and the excellent comment just above mine, by
IndieInIndy a post or so.

Not all of the missions directly lead into each other, so I guess you could rationalise it as Garrett using his gear in between.
Also, it mostly makes sense from a gameplay perspective. Knowing that I want purchasing power for the next mission motivates me into obsessive thievery.

There is a certain logic to that.

No you're a towel.
The reason T1/T2 throw away your inventory and cash between missions is precisely so you'll use them instead of hoarding them. It may not make sense from a logic perspective, but it was absolutely the best thing to do from a
gameplay perspective.

I agree with you ZB. When I started playing I'd hoard all my stuff. Then I realized that there was no penalty for using it, so I started experimenting with different ways to play. Some of the most fun I've had was messing around with my equipment. :erm: I meant gear!! :tsktsk:
