I'm wondering if this download is similar to the Direct2Drive version in that the file system is different from the DVD/CD versions. I have the D2D version and am pissed that I can't get it to work with Minimalist or the John P texture upgrades.
Moreover I can't find it at any retails around here and I don't want to have to ship it in. :(

you may have to. i don't trust downloaded games. even though i play a lot of valve games i still buy them in a box first.

Same problem, from what I hear.

I'm not sure about TDS, but I know the downloadable version of TG is like that. You can't play fanmissions on it, you can't 'unzip' the crf files to access the sounds/images/text, and there's no real way to back it up. (They only give you a limited number of downloads, so if you get it that way and install it, don't UNinstall it or remove it until you're sure you don't want it anymore)
I would wager that TDS is very similar. You can play it, but thats about it.
I would say buy it in the box. Ebay or one of those little places online that'll ship it to you.
I bought TG from the downloadable one, and I regret it. Sure I got to play it, but for the same price I could have bought the real one somewhere. Now I have to pay *again* to get it. If I can ever find it when I have money in my pocket. I ended up finding a cd RIp of it to put on my laptop which works just fine. (And before anyone yells at me, I have also bought TDP since then, and am still looking for an affordable copy of TG on disk. :P )
So, yeah, I'd just say if you like Thief, buy them on disk and never mind the downloadable versions.

i bought myself a spare copy (just in case) of thief gold from a seller on amazon. it'll be used, but as long as it installs perfectly i won't mind (i always do max installs anyway.) it hasn't arrived yet... expecting it in the coming week or so. supposed to be in near-perfect condition.
once i get some fresh cash in my bank account (it's just about dry) i'll buy a spare copy of thief 2. that one's more likely to be from eidos' website, since i prefer new copies to used.
