You need to set "ShowIntroMovies=True" to "ShowIntroMovies=False"
Yes, I tried that first.
When set to False all that happens is the movie doesn't play before the loading screen - but it still plays immediately after the menu appears. And so on. I have to force a crash to get out of it by hitting Esc really quickly and trying to click a menu item before it starts playing again. If I'm lucky I can hang the game with a Windows error, otherwise it locks up and a soft reset is in order.

To clarify the problem further:
Under normal circumstances there is a pause when on the menu screen before the intro movie starts playing. This would happen after a period of dormancy (a few minutes), a bit like a screensaver. The problem is that there is no pause! Something is triggering it to play it immediately without the normal delay time.
This happens regardless of whether movies have been turned off in DEFAULT.INI

Have you unplugged any USB controllers? This can also be caused by USB keyboards e.g. Saitek.

I have a Logitech G5 laser mouse. I previously thought this might be a problem so I switched to a regular PS2 ball mouse - made no difference.
I have a regular, no-frills PS2 keyboard. I have no other game controllers or even a joystick port available. I tried unplugging every single USB device but that made no difference either. :erg:
Thanks for the suggestions so far, anyhow. Keep 'em coming - I need ideas here. I can't believe I'm the only person to have this problem. Somebody must have encountered this and solved it.

BTW, I had a same kind of problem with a game called "Trespasser". The solution was to uninstalling the game and deleting all the registry entries relating to this game. After that, I installed the game again and the problem was gone.
But before trying that, I suggest you do the following:
Move the file called "ThiefTrailerNoESRB.bik" (located in content\t3\VideoTextures\ folder) to some other folder. See if it works...

Thanks Skynet, I will try this later when I get home from work and let you know how I get on.

Just reading down some of the posts about USB... I have a Logitech cordless keyboard and mouse. But... I think - and I stress the word "think" - that when I had this problem there was a flash drive in one of the USB ports. I don't think I've played T3 since with a flash drive plugged in and so far haven't had the problem arise. But that might be just a coincidence.
Meanwhile, the problem being described is exactly the same as what I experience - right down to the last detail.

Done. All registry items deleted and a totally clean install into a new directory. Made no difference.

The movie no longs plays. Instead, there is a constant flashing between the menu and the startup quotation ('Recorded text lost...' etc). It makes it easier to click a menu item, but as soon as the new screen loads (e.g. Options) it just hangs (although you can still move the mouse - maybe a hidden Windows message behind the display). In other words, the behaviour is exactly the same - just without the movie.

Tried it with all USB devices removed and a regular PS2 mouse installed. No difference.

This is the last trick, that could work (usually fixes the main menu problem on win98/me machines):
1. Open "Default.ini"
2. Find the line "LoadFromResourceBlockFiles=False" and change it to "True"*
3. Save and exit
4. Launch the game
Also, make sure that you haven´t force the Anti-Aliasing on in Nvidia Display Control Panel (try the default settings for Global Driver Settings).

Done. No change in application behaviour.

I noticed there is a Thief DS profile in the driver settings but it appears to be identical to the global driver settings. No amount of tinkering seems to make any difference, however. Same behaviour.
I'm running out of ideas now. I think of the people on this forum as the Thief experts. If there's a Thief problem, you'll know about it. I'm just wondering whether this really is an undocumented problem. Some people have suggested that similar things have happened, but that they worked themselves out by simple means e.g. re-install, or 'it just went away'. My experience of this problem is brutally consistent.
Thief DS worked fine on my old system, but hasn't at all on this new one. Most of the software is exactly the same (no new background processes). It's really just the key hardware that has changed: NVidia VGA (previously used Radeon), mobo, CPU, HDD.
