Thief 1 & 2 work fine if you install OpenAL sound drivers and choose it in the settings menu. But I find that one of my favorite fan missions "Endless Rain" does not play well with OpenAL. Instead of rain sound you get a constant staccato white noise. Has anyone else experienced this particular issue with other fan missions?

I actually had this issue yesterday. To fix it I converted the audio files to 16bit in AngelLoader.

Yep, AngelLoader's default is to convert all wav files to 16-bit upon FM install, to solve exactly this problem.

Thank you all! I downconverted them to 16 bit and they sound fine. Now I can replay this mission with much improved true directional sound. I am assuming the reason for the sound clipping is that OpenAL is so old that it was based on handling 16bit max audio files.

Such problems did also appear with "Old Dark", e.g., with "Sturmdrang Peak". There was certainly no OpenAL involved there. Many systems have problems playing sounds with more than 16 bits/sample or 44.1 kHz sampling frequency in "Thief" and "Thief 2". I dimly remember that there was something written about this in the "Endless Rain" thread as well.
Since 16 bit stereo with 44.1 kHz is CD quality sound, I usually see no reason to go above this with any recording, and certainly not with anything made for "Thief".
