I very much doubt he would contribute to the Dark Mod in any positive or significant way.
Ok, you're right. I was thinking about the other guy. I swear he started a webpage that talked about something, nevermind.

@Martek - regarding the (
http://www.ttlg.com/forums/showthread.php?t=105782) "The 3D engine I'm devloping", that's got nothing to do with this. He's talking about his idea for a 3D engine, because some of us wanted to hear the technical details. He's not boasting and asking people to join him either.
True, he is more low-key about it (i.e.; not making a big, "showy" website and forums and all that easy-to-do pizzaz).
But he isn't just talking his ideas. He says he is developing the engine:

...the 3D engine I'm currently developing...
So it isn't just a thread about ideas on how or what such an engine should be like, it's more like "here's how my engine will be when it's done".
If you take away the "fancy front-end website/forums/call for a big team" you are still left with one individual claiming to be develping an advanced 3D engine the like of which one might wonder if John Carmack himself could pull off.
In that sense, it is "talking the talk" and no "walk" as of yet, same case as for this <now apparently dead> mod.
Don't read me wrong; I really hope he can write that engine he describes. But I hope one can forgive my skepticism because at this point it's all talk (like this mod). That's what is similar to me. It's "talk" and not "walk" so far. And usually "talk" isn't accepted so easily on these forums (as evidenced by this thread), but it is on that thread for some reason. It's just an observation.
[Edit]: I left out part of my observation - both users are new members with no known history of ability around these parts. Seemingly joined mainly for their "big announcement". And, to be sure, hexarith hasn't posted in a while now, since last talking about his engine. Another similarity...
Cheers,
Martek

I just wanted to hear his technical approach to acheive the things he described, regardless of wether it will work or not, or regardless if it will get done or not. That's why I asked him to start the thread.
How else can a person talk about their project in any other way than "This is what it WILL be like, it WILL get done", etc. If you don't have faith in yourself you've already lost. Don't critisize him for that.

This whole thread is so strange. The guy never explained exactly what it was that the Doom 3 engine couldn't do.
How could he explain this? If he were serious, he would have been shown wrong, but he might have changed his opinion. If he were not serious he also would have been shown wrong, but then he would have to admit that he either didnt think it through, or that the whole point was just to get attention.

And apparently he had Garret on the website and still maintained he wouldn't be infringing copyright?

You are right about this. But then the 3D engine thread is not so flashy and not much ersponse anyway. The approach is pretty much the same though.

So when someone posts their new idea for something, they should be careful to word everything tentitavely, as if it may never happen, just to avoid ridicule? Fuck that. We (TDM) dont act that way, no one else should.
sparhawk on 15/5/2006 at 13:53
No. But it will be ridiculed, if you make grand promises and big show with barely spending 2 days of effort on your project. :ebil:
It also depends on how you present your project. I'm sure that, if you present your project in such a way, that it seems feasable, it will more likely be well received then if you show that you haven't thought about it much.
You have to expect criticism. That's a fact. So the very least I would expect is, to think about what problems might occur and then you can answer it if people ask such stuff. A good example is the claim that D3 can not do what the poster wanted, without ever saying what this would suppose to be, and also not answering when asked about it. This doesn't really add to credibillity. :)

I liked that bit where he claimed to have some "tricks up his sleeve" for making the Source engine more Thief-like.
Tricks like what? Finding somebody who knows something about Source and asking for their help?

Yeah I know, but all hexarith was doing was describing how his 3D engine would work. As I've said several times -
I asked him to, because I wanted to know how he would go about it. And as far as I can see, hexarith answered all my questions.
How is he supposed to describe how it will work, without you guys lumping him in the same catagory as thieftransgressions?
This has become a place where people can't even
talk about new ideas, without being ridiculed.
sparhawk on 15/5/2006 at 14:22
AFAIK this thread is about Thief Transgression and not about hexarith. So where exactly was hexarith ridiculed in the same way?

FFS, scroll back and start reading again from Martek's post on page 2, I'm not writing up another executive summary just for your benifit.
Otherwise, just forget it.
