Why can't Garrett just change his clothes to avoid detection like Agent 47 ? Does he HAVE to go out wearing the black thief's outfit every time ? He may as well be wearing a black and white stripey sweater and carrying a bag that says 'SWAG' on it.
Why can't he close his eyes when he throws a flashbomb ?

That would be fun, but then everything will be too easy :p

Well, since the City is always dark. I don't think Garrett needs a flashy outfit when doing his job :D

He can still look the other way seconds after tossing the flashbomb, and flee :cheeky:

He only wears that outfit in the City without concealing his thief gear with his cloak ingame in TDS. And that's not something that could be considered as canon behavior because the technology to create free-flowing dynamic fabrics in real time just wasn't ready yet during TDS' development, so the devs scrapped the idea of Garrett wearing his normal casual outfit ingame. Remember how in the cutscenes he's always wearing his cloak like it was always there? Same with Thief 2. The ingame model visible only through the scouting orb was really bad, but in no other place was Garrett depicted without him wearing his hooded cloak. And those who don't know, a hooded cloak is not exclusive to thieves. Everyone who doesn't want to catch a cold in a rainstorm owns one.
Anyway, on the subject... Climbing on top of a 1/2 meter wide wall is easy. Climbing over a 5cm wide wooden fence is impossible. Nothing can be climbed "over". If there's not enough space on top of the obstacle to comfortably stand on, the only way to get over it is by getting a bit speed and really jumping over it. How hard can that be?
And also, if you grab a ledge and you can't climb up in that specific position, why do you need to let go and fall to your death instead of shimmying to the side and finding a suitable position to climb up?

The flashbomb thing has always driven me a little nuts. I've tried 'turning' Garrett's head to avoid the temporary blindness, to no avail. End result is that I end up charging the intended adversary, flailing blindly about with my blackjack and sometimes miss my mark. As was said, in RL Garrett could simply close his eyes.

In RL you'd just (some fun intended):
- kill zombies by slicing them in-half at their exposed spinal column at their waists.
- pick up a small mech and chuck him against a wall.
- carry the HL2 grav gun and throw a mech's cannon ball back at him.
- put a Frogbeast down a sleeping guard's trousers.
- have a little fun with unconscious ladies.
- use your mechanical eye to perv on posh totty.
- wedge a door shut with furniture to evade pursuing guards.
- make electrical lights malfunction by shooting a water arrow at them.
- capture burrick farts and use them in modified gas arrows.
- capture that little golden mech boy in 'Life Of The Party' and pawn him!
Have you also noticed how guards always know there's a 'taffer' about just because they hear footsteps - in a crowded area with many persons? How do they always know it's Garrett and not just some other guard or nobleman?
Well at least the sudden heart attack syndrome is pretty realistic - if you know of anyone who's ever just dropped down dead of such a complication! :( Note that I got SHAS last night playing 'RTTC' in TDP on the broken cloister steps.

My biggest bugbear is with ladders. Sometimes you struggle to attach onto them, particular from the top. If you want to climb off a ledge and down onto a ladder Garrett won't always attach and he falls away from the building.
Also detaching from ladders. Quite often you can just climb to the bottom of a ladder and walk away, you have to jump off and given the number of ladders with a metal/marble floor at the bottom that's not funny.

After years of playing Thief 1 and 2, the ladders usually won't be a problem for you. Usually. I still know that the ladders in T1 and T2 are really buggy, but I've somehow learned to live with it. But it still beats the hell out of ladders that only allow you to drop down or get off at either end like in TDS.
So, in real life you'd be able to jump off ladders to any direction you wish, but you'd also have no problem grabbing the ladders in the first place without dying, or letting go of them without making a lot of noise. ;)
