This is my first time playing the Thief games, so I have some questions.
I started with Thief II, since I just happened to acquire it before Thief Gold. I installed NewDark for Thief 2 and TFix for Gold and made it through the first couple missions in II well enough, but:
1. Is Mynell's key in Shipping and Receiving bugged sometimes? I pushed a button, heard something hit the ground, checked all over the floor. I checked under the opoen grate, looked up the exact location online, spammed right click, and found nothing.
2. The movement. The Dark engine wasn't exactly the smoothest back then and it isn't now. Is diagonal movement the fastest way to get around? It was pretty quick in System Shock 2, and it seems to be the case here. It also feels a little clunky and slippery especially when walking on narrow ledges. Can you jump and grab certain ledges?
3. Rope arrows. Where do I use those? Have I been missing a lot of opportunities to use them, or are there just not that many yet? I haven't seen a lot of wooden surfaces.
4. This is for Thief Gold. Is there a way to make walking the default? Running is default and I have to hold shift to walk, which is the opposite of Thief II.

Idk about 1, but ...
2. You can mantle, yes.
3. The texture for using rope arrows is a bit more varied in T2 than in TG. You can fire them at crates - or basically anything that looks like it's made of wood. I'd suggest quicksaving before firing one if you wanted to be sure.
4. Run is not a modifier in TG. Neither is walk. As far as I can tell, you're 'meant' to bind W to run, S to walk, and X to backstep. That's why, if you bind run to Shift+W and walk to W, and start walking but then decide to run, you'll have to let go of W and then use Shift+W. It's a bit awkward, yeah, but maybe someone has an ini tweak to help you out.

4) a bunch of custom keybinds is provided with TFix, go to controls/customize controls/load and try the classic set.

You can also try with broadhead arrows and see if they stay in there or just break/disappear. Rope arrows will behave the same. Since you usually have more broadheads... that and it may help you with aiming.

You can customize controls as you like, I use W for walk and Q+W for run, if I walk and want to run, I just press Q without letting go of W. Works for me :)

Kind of late, but I forgot about this thread for a bit.
Is the game legitimately tougher on higher difficulties? Are guards more aware or are there more of them or anything? The guards seem really unperceptive and generally are just really easy to blackjack on Normal, even though I know ideally you shouldn't be knocking people out.

not compatible with TFix, hdmod, and probably Tafferpatcher as well.
