Thief Gold Bug... - by Moscato

Perhaps someone can help me with this...
Each time i try to skip the tutorial to start a a new game, the game loads well the cutscene but when it comes to load the level to start playing it crushes, if i do the tutorial this doesn`t happen. If i use a savegame the game runs well, but if i use one of the completed savegames hosted on the website (in the mods section) the game crushes :S
I have a full instalation of Thief Gold, with the fix for the memory bug. All this running with the lastest DX and VGA drivers on Win XP sp2.
This is the first time ( if i recall correctly ) that i install the game on Win XP, in the past it worked perfectly on 98, my system specs are just normal so this is really odd. :confused:

And where is the solution to the thread poster's problem in the FAQ? It lists nothing like the problem he or she describes.

I have read the faq MANY times (i had issues with the texture improvement patchs), but my problem is not answered in there, i search the forums and found nothing...so i made a topic.

Welcome to the ever-helpful ThiefGen tech support service, Moscato...
Anyway, to clarify your problem as I understand it:
* If you play the training mission, it loads fine;
* If you continue on to the first mission from the training mission, that loads fine too;
* If you skip training and start with the first mission, it crashes after the buy-equipment screen;
* If you load one of your savegames from the first mission or onwards it loads fine;
* If you load somebody else's savegame from the first mission or onwards it crashes.
Is this the case? In particular, have you played beyond the first mission successfully, and if so have you tried loading your savegames from beyond the first mission? Also, have you tried someone else's savegame from the first mission? Also, it does crash after the buy-equipment screen, right?

That`s exactly what happens.
I have played beyond the first mission without any crashes. I also used 1rst mission saves (and any other mission saves from the site) resulting in crashes; yes this happens exactly after the equipment screen.
I will install Thief 2 to see if this "bug" is there too.
Thx for your help.

Here's another question, then...
Were your savegames (the ones that work) saved inside the mission, meaning you start playing immediately when you reload them? Or were they saved before the mission starts, thus requiring you to watch the intro and go through the loadout screen to play the mission?
Likewise, are the savegames you downloaded (the ones that don't work) saved before the mission starts, or inside the mission?

Hmm, my savegames are just normal savegames made once the mission is running. The savegames from the site, begin in the Objective menu, how where they made? no idea :P
Anyway the fact that i can`t skip training, tells me that there`s something wrong somewhere beyond those savegames.

I don't think the savegames themselves are the problem; what I suspect is that somehow the buy-equipment screen is screwing stuff up unless you've been in a mission beforehand. The training mission has no buy-equipment screen, and your own savegame files bypass the buy-equipment screens for those missions.
To test this, you could load one of your working savegames, and then start a new game with skip-training or load one of the nonworking savegames. Of course you may already have done this, in which case we can probably scratch that theory.
For what it's worth, you can make a savegame that starts before the mission, rather than in the mission: by either a) saving directly after completing the last mission, or b) reloading a mission savegame, pressing ESC, choosing Restart from the menu, then saving at that point. This would be worth trying with your own savegames to see if we can manifest the crashing problem with them.
