Just thought I'd mention that trygames.com has Thief Gold for $19.99. Better still, it installed in my winxp home sp2 system without any problems, and ran the first time! Nvidia ForceWare 93.71 if anyone's interested. The only thing wrong was the movies werent playing, which was fixed by registering the lgvid.ax file.
(start>run> C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\regsvr32.exe c:\progra~1\thief_gold\lgvid.ax) In fact, when I tried to use the thieffixedgold exe it would crash without loading. So now, with all the Thief II textures and meshes in place, running from darkloader v4.3, I'm one happy Thief!

Just as a warning, so you don't feel ripped off later, these try and buy versions of the game are only good for playing as is. IE, you cannot get into the files, you cannot play FMs, you cannot alter the game in any way, you cannot back up the game. You can only play it as they distribute it. Zip. Thats it. If thats all you want its fine, but if you want full access of the game, you'll need a proper disc version. :P
Enjoy! :)

Elentari, did you even read his post? It seems to directly conflict with your results in the eBay thread. I've been curious about game downloads (that's where it's heading) and don't know what to believe here.

Well, to squash some rumours, the trygames.com version of Thief Gold is, for starters, saved in c:\downloads\ThiefGoldSetup.exe. I can use 7-zip to open the archive and extract individual files from the archive, but not edit or add files. I have complete access to the game files and directories as installed on my hard drive. Secondly, as I mentioned, I have it set up and running with the Thief II textures and running from darkloader. I do not seem to have any trouble running FMs, either. As far as $4.99 I dont know where that's at, but I couldn't find it! (Can you tell me? I'll be needing Thief II soon...) I did however find it for $9.99 at softwarestore.com but that DID seem to be an 'as-is' download that did not work! Actually everything at softwarestore.com seemed that way, so I'd say *avoid softwarestore.com* But trygames.com version seems ok. And, since you've mention price, anyone check amazon.com for the prices on Thief Gold lately?

The cheapest price I could find for a hard version of Thief: Gold was 25 USD.

Yes, I did, thought it was very late at the time and I was literally half asleep. But it does not conflict with my opinion from the ebay thread. I have maintained the whole time that the try and buy version are not as good as they seem because while they play well you are limited in your usage. And I know, as I did it before I realized.
BentlyTCow, you seem to have managed more than I did in nearly a month of trying to get my version to give up its secrets. Congrats! Maybe we got two different version of try and buy? Or maybe you managed something different than I tried. I used Winzip and winrar trying to get the thing open and they all came back 'bad files' (in the zip program. The game itself apparently has no trouble accessing it). Although, looking at my receipt we seem to have gotten it from the same place. Trymedia.com/trygames.com Maybe they changed it since I got it? I don't know, but I still wouldn't recommend it. :P It still miffs me that I can't put it on CD and back it up for future use. But eh.
You said you opened the ThiefGoldSetup.exe maybe that is what made the difference. I just set it up properly. *thinks* Maybe I will redownload that and try again. . .think you could burn it to disk as a proper game that way?
But yes, I did read the first time, maybe didn't comprhened due to lack of sleep, but I still maintain that buying it on CD is best. And, BentlyTCow, if you need Thief 2, last time I checked, you *can* get that on Amazon.com for 2 or 3 dollars. (Plus shipping of course) Through a 3rd party seller, but I got mine and DP from there and they came pretty quickly.

Maybe it's all in how it's done? I paid for the game and then downloaded it, where some seem to have done it the other way round. It seems to be in the installer, from what I've examined, that sets up the trygames physical limitations. Maybe I'd be able to extract all the files and manually write to and install it from cd.
