So I've been struggling with the key bindings in Thief: Gold for several days, and I simply cannot find a scheme to make it work for me. I've tried editing user.bnd, autohotkey, various esoteric configurations, and I'd really love to stop worrying about the goddamn controls and play the actual game.
Specifically, all I really want is to have ONE key to move forward "w", and two modifier keys, one to make me run (shift) and one to make me creep (ctrl) What's really holding me up is that there is no way to run without having to bind a completely separate key, and it really doesn't help that Thief resets my bindings every time I open it  Is anyone willing to help me out with this?

Thats the configuration I use for movement and it always botherd me that Thief would reset the movement modifier (for creeping) to shift, but if you open Dark.Bnd and uncomment the line "bind shift +creepon" ( with a ; ) it should fix the problem. Then you can bind creeping to crtl from the games menu and bind running with shift+w (by pressing both keys).

Thanks! I got it working just fine and many future hours of frustration were saved :D

Check which file it is you need to edit (user.bnd or dark.bnd? looks like you two are talking about different files) - and you could also try making it read-only, see if that stops the game from changing it back. EDIT oh nm, you solved it.
As an alternative, I highly, highly recommend playing Thief with an analogue controller for movement. Thief has excellent joystick support and it adds a whole new level of subtlety and uncertainty to the game. Beats the keyboard hands down, I won't go back.

I don't really know if my problem was in any way similar to yours, but.. basically I was trying to make my Thief: Gold speed control keys the same way they are for me in T2: middle mouse button (the one which acts as both a scroll and a button) for running, shift for walking and left control key for creeping. Never managed it. :(
