I'm having exact same problems with a 7900GT and the latest drivers. I haven't tried older drivers yet. I really hope someone can fix the game to run on newer drivers if that is the problem. I got one mission to play ONCE by choosing software mode, then launching the game, then going back to hardware mode, but that only worked once and is not enjoyable to perform every time you attempt to play.

Just an FYI I posted a support request to NVIDIA about the issue and while they did not verify that they would fix this particular issue the response I received was this:
"We recommend you to please revert back to your previous Forceware version since, there is a bug in 91.31 version and will be fixed at an undisclosed date in the future. "
I'm doubtful the bug they are referring to is the one we all suffer from, but I'm hopeful that they will at least look into it.
Its much better than ATI support. When the latest ATI driver would not work with Thief the response I got was "play newer games" at which point I switched to Nvidia which solved problems that ATI drivers had introduced into 4 different games over time. I'm hoping Nvidia stays vigilant, there's no one else to switch to!
