I'm just curious as to why some authors are doing Thief Gold missions. I don't mean any disrespect to anyone. Is it because of T1's grittiness, or Old School feel?
I believe when this was asked (before ND came along), the stock answer was, "I don't have Thief 2." And that's cool. Having spent 17 years in various countries, I can see how getting even mediocre software can be nearly impossible.

I guess if you're going for an old-school, mostly-stock Thief 1-feeling mission, it's slightly less work to do it in Thief Gold than to port resources, but since New Dark, there's not really any solid reason to unless you don't own Thief 2.

They like it. I like it, too.

Speaking as a player, not an author, I really like TG FMs. And the T2 FMs I've played that try to capture that TDP or TG feel, don't quite make it. They're close, but something undefinable (to me, anyway) is missing. Also, it's a bit of nostalgia to use the TG interfaces, such as the menu/loading screens. Perhaps those could also be recreated in T2, I don't know, but to me a TG or TDP mission just has a different aesthetic, and it's not just the textures and AI skins. I don't really know what it is.

Certainly with New Dark it's entirely possible to create a Thief 2 mission that is indistinguishable from a Thief 1 mission - you could import all menu graphics, sounds, all low-poly AI models, all T1 voices and ambients, all T1 textures. The only difference would be things like being able to zoom, and having Objective Complete dings. It's a lot of effort to make it seamless though, so it's just easier to make it for T1 if that's the look you're going for.

I'm kind of offended by that but oh well...
The reason I make them is because I love Thief Gold and like it way better than Thief 2. I also feel like it's my responsibility to do what I love doing and that is making Thief Gold FM's. I also feel like there aren't enough Thief Gold missions so I like to add some more to the game. Also what's wrong with it? I mean c'mon now! With the NewDark engine there isn't much of a difference between engines on the two games other than lack of resources. When I say lack of resources I mean lack of resources in Thief 2 :bored:
Also Thief 2 is boring to me and I'd rather play a nice Thief 1 mission :sly:
Also one more thing! Two words and they are "Bunny Hop" :joke:

You can use NewDark with both T1 and TG. Just install it and use it. It will work with all the T1 and TG resources and doesn't crash as often. I imagine most players will play the mission through NewDark anyhow. So why stick with the old buggy editor?

You could do that before, too. I don't know what you think NewDark has to do with this.

Which is why I said, "I don't want to be disrespectful."
Heck, I love TG and T2 both...well, except for the boxy, Minecraft feel of some of T1's AI. Where is PinkDot when you need him?
@ZB: Apparently, you don't realize what NewDark can do! I have it check my OS when booting up, it filters my emails, and checks my bank balance. Even my Train Simulator runs better with ND choo-choo-ing away in the background.

What I mean is that the engines are now identical. Before New Dark, you could transfer all the resources to T2 but you'd still have the fancier engine. New Dark's now made T1 fancy too, so there's really no difference apart from the resources used by the author.
