Thief Gold: Mage Towers Expert = Impossible without Guide. - by MILO1985

Hey guys,
Just thought I would share this: it's impossible to complete Thief Gold on Expert without a guide,
in the mission Mage Towers I was unable to find the jeweled glasses, so I started clicking all the possible books,
because as everyone knows, library = hidden book switches, and I spend 3 hours and found no switches.
Then I gave up and went to see a guide and it says hidden book switch .....
So I looked at the place where it was supposed to be and it was there ......
I doubt it is possible for anyone to find it on their own, I mean I had the right idea
about book switch, but the highlight is way too tiny to be noticeable when you just click through.
Can someone confirm this was just an extra objective that is only possible if you have the guide right?
I can't play this game any more, it was a challenge to complete, but developers keep putting
the impossible to find switches that you can only identify using guide
I clicked on the library books 3 hours and didn't find it, I mean I can't just waste time on a game that's not possible without guide.

Yes. It was not possible to frob the switch without being told where it was first.
The game was actually holding out on you.
After it understood that you consulted the guide, it figured it'd better go ahead and allow you to frob the switch.

The game gives you bonus points if you steal a guide from the derelict corner of a dusty old second hand game shop and use that.
But you have to be wearing a hood.

okay, i'm not going to jump on that lets joke at the new boy, but... nothing is impossible if its there. I will admit some bits are bloody hard.. Sometimes (on both Oringal and Fan Missions) i haven't been able to find something pretty well hiddern, though 'Okay.. Logically where is it? Would the person who needs to use it use it alot? if so, someplace easy to get to.. Would they expect some people to look for it, and so it would be well hiddern?' etc.. sadly, you can't always used detective work as.. well, thief isn't a detective game (has anyone made a nice detective based level yet? I Don't remember seeing ones that are truely a detective based mission).
In oringal missions, i always felt switchs were pretty easy to find and in the open. Rarely hidden, say, behind a book, so you need to remove the book first. Also, fake books that are switchs are always fairly easy to find, until some fan missions came along with polygon book cases (more then just textures) making it alot harder ^_^;
If you are finding the game SOOO hard to do on expert mode.. maybe that isn't the mode for you?
I was a little disspointed a while back.. it's been some time since i played the oringal Thief Gold (yes, no Thief: TDP, but Gold) and i played it on expert and just walked it in my sleep, where as i remember it used to be harder.. maybe cause soo many fan missions are much harder, the oringal ones have become easy.. good sign of improvement in my playing skills.. I take it, you haven't really played too many fan missions yet?

It's not that hard but I also do happen to get stuck in some fan missions where a tiny little hidden switch is required to proceed with the main objective and often they are hidden in ilogical places.
Sometimes I find almost everything just by luck sometimes I don't, I guess that's why the secrets are, they are not meant to be looked for, you just spot them if you are lucky. But being part of the main objective is alittle too much unless it's logicaly placed.

Having beat the Thief TDP and Thief 2 10 years ago on normal, I am replaying Gold Edition,
obviously it would be pointless unless I use the expert mode, so I get to complete new objectives.
And I didn't have any problems locating anything thus far.
I obviously had the right idea that there was supposed to be a book switch, and I explored all the book cases in the library clicking on them continually, but it didn't activate. It should have been made having larger hitbox.

Ugh, I hate switch hunting. It always leads to aimless wandering and blind frobbing, then annoyance and disinterest. I spent hours on the Mage Towers looking for the glasses. I too suspected there was a hidden book switch in the library, but was still unable to find it, and eventually had to consult a guide.
Getting stuck for hours != fun

Sorry Milo. You need more patience and time with the game. You need to Bob and Weave when you are looking for switches. Crouch, lean R&L, books are usually easy, if you are close enough to the shelf.
The hard ones are under desks, in corners, behind plants etc.

How can you be "blind frobbing" in a game which highlights the frobbable item?
It's been a while, but from memory, both the switch and the hidden room were logically placed.
I agree that the loot count and hidden items are the hardest aspect of playing on expert, and will occasionally play on normal when I don't feel like completing every nook and cranny of a mission. But I don't recall the placement of items ever feeling unfair.

In the OM's, blind frobbing isn't necessary, but unfortunately there are some FM's where switches have been placed in absurd places - behind furniture, for example - where they are literally impossible to see and can only be found by blind frobbing.
