I have TDP original and will finish soon. Probably. Should I play Gold next or Thief II?
Zylon's Bane if you're reading this stop.....stop now!
On to my next question. (And, Oh dear Gods, let the other brethren be merciful!)
Is the instruction manual for either game instructional? For instance, does it inform the user how to make the character creep and walk and climb onto ladders? I've managed to make it toward the end of this game without discovering the above, but it would be nice to know. Might make the game less like work.

Thief Gold is the "director's cut" version of Thief:TDP. It's got a bunch of improvments (including prettier textures) and three additional levels. Does that help?
If I were you I'd probably play Thief II next, and then Thief Gold afterward.

The manuals, I believe, would tell you how to climb ladders. But I'll just tell you now: mantle up and jump off, same key, time it right when you jump off so you don't make a lot of noise (unless the area you're in is deserted).
The manuals should also tell you what the default key-bindings are for which commands and/or how and where to change the key-bindings.
Also, the FAQ has links to manuals.

There are instruction manuals?
I think that you'll find that you'll learn far more here than ever in any manuals. After five years I'm still learning new things...like last week when some wrote that you could burn tapestries with the flare!

The manuals pretty much give the standard game descriptions highlighting special features in the game. The 1st/training mission in TDP and Gold is where they really show you how to do sneaking around and manouvering stuff before throwing you into a full level. TDS doesn't do it nearly so well. If you want advanced techniques you'll have to dig for them, or risk Zylon Bane's and others wrath by asking here. You'd do well to look up stuff from Lytha- she was the uberThief ages ago.
