I too have some trouble getting into TG for long. TMA is no problem (SS2 isn't a problem either) but I can recognize it's value as an experience, and historical importance. I'm not sure what it is, Maybe the way TG starts out or something.
Originally, when Thief was first out and I was 13 or however old I was. I had to stop playing for a very long time because of the damn zombies.

One of my mom's friends gave us the first game. We hardly ever did anything past the first level. That is, until we found the little "skip level" thing. Hehehe :ebil: ...
I agree that the soundtrack is amazing, and the story never failed to intrest me.
I wonder, does anyone agree that TDS lost some of its charm from the last two games? I felt it had a good story, but nothing is better then one gaurd coming up to a dead guy and saying:
"Are you alright? No, of course you're not alright. Sorry..."
Ahh, that thiefy goodness :)

I find the graphics + audio still very good for its age, especially audio. Few games comes close to thief for that proper setting/mood.
My problem is the AI. I've been playing for so long that the AI is easy to figure out and I don't really have the time nor the patience to ghost through levels.
It's hardly ever a challenge anymore. And zombies do not frighten me one bit these days...:erg:

Thats pretty much how I feel about it. Audio and ambients are just superb, even today. I love it.
The AI, I can run right past them. You can get away from them easily, if need be. The zombies, they are too slow. Doesn't phase me in the least anymore. The Haunts, run up behind them, full hit with a sword, down they go. Doesn't mean I don't love them still.

The Dark Project is a much tighter package in my opinion and never really benefited from being diluted by the piss poor Gold missions. I can't say I'm surprised if anyone trying Thief for the first time finds Gold a bit duff - throw out the chaff though (there's a reason they never made it into the original release) and Thief 1 is still one of the most captivating video games ever.

That's quite novel, actually, preferring TDP toTG. I have tried TG for the very first time very recently. Now, there were some bug fixes and touch-ups in other missions, notably the beginning ones, but the three new missions were surely the main selling point of the Gold edition.
After having played them, my feelings are kind of neutral towards Thieves' Guild, negative towards The Mage Towers, and positive towards Song of the Caverns.
In other words, I disagree with you that they were "piss poor." I do agree that the plot might not progress as quickly in TG, because of a delay of three missions. And I believe there were
many reasons they never made it into the original release. Quality alone does not adequately explain it.

I really liked Thieves' Guild, loved Mage Towers, and didn't like Song of the Caverns much (like beginning 1/3, didn't like the whole opera house at all)

See? Thief Gold has something for everyone. ;)

This seems like the perfect thread for this point.
I wanted to mention "THE KEEP" -By Apache the last few days. If you think Thief 1 is out-dated after that then there is no help. :)
I do think installing the enhancement pack is well worth it, if only for the small changes.
I played through both the Metal Age and Thief Gold again the last week, on expert, not reading scrolls etc, and trying to finish the missions as quickly as I could with basic objectives entering a mission and no extra equipment. I still like Thief Gold more its alot more atmospheric and my god it still can make my skin crawl when you get spooked by the dead. I also feel that " Casing the Joint and Masks" are irksome and ruin the momentum of the game. Anyhow rant rant..
