I'm having the exact same problem. Sigh. I tried running in compatibility mode for NT 4, which worked yesterday, but crashes just as fast now.

I am glad that I also have Thief 2... I just wanted to check the three extra missions anyway and perhaps some FMs. But since it's not working so good I'll just.... :(
The awkward thing is that I never had any problems with the normal dark project. But this director's cut causes a lot of them!!

... when I do play mission my desk top shows up for like half a second and then the mission comes up, Im not running it in compatibility mode.
I have been playing Thief I and II as well as several fan missions on different machines using Windows 98 SE, and I can occasionally see my desktop for a short time after pressing the "play" button in the game. It's obviously a normal thing, but it's hard to notice on fast machines. I think it happens when the game engine switches to the resolution and graphics card chosen for the game. Before pressing "Play", the game uses a resolution of 640x480 pixels on the primary graphics card, but in the game it uses the hardware and resolution you selected in the options menu. I bet this short "desktop flash" is somehow tied to this process.

Odd. It just worked for a bit again. I tried to see if I could recreate it after I quit, but alas.
Maybe someone else here can be helped by (
http://www.ntcompatible.com/Thief_Gold_c1540.html) this?
I just tried again after writing that, and through some random turn of events, it worked. Starting a new game still crashes it, but saved games (from that one time it
did work normally) load properly. Hm. Odd.

hehe... That's the same here. :) I had to go through the traininglevel as I said. SKipping the training level didn'T work. Neither did the GOLDSKIP.EXE of course. I am really glad that the ctrl+alt+shirt+end shortcut was implemented... :)

Dumb question but.. how do I use the compatability mode? I don't think I've ever used it
I'll give that cpu selection a go.. its funny that thought did flicker through my head but I thought "nah thats crazy" :weird:

Right-click the shortcut or .exe and select properties, then the Compatibility tab. Windows 2000 compatibility generally works best for Thief, I think.

Alright, I fixed it.
As mentioned in (
http://ttlg.com/forums/showthread.php?t=110463) this thread, the 9*.** nvidia drivers may break this game, so I tried it.
I reverted to 84.21 by just bluntly installing that driver. No removal tools or any other actions to remove the old (newer, actually) driver.
I can now click "new game" any number of times without it crapping out on me and windows wanting to send an error report. Yay!

Got it working!!!
It seems it was all down to not spotting the compatibility mode. Soon as I selected to run in Win 2000 mode it was fine.
Ah.. was good to see Old Baffords pad again. I wonder if he changed the pool water since I was there last. :eww:
