Recently, I tried reinstalling Thief Gold. My computer has been updated with a lot of new hardware since the last time I played. I got the texture memory error. Trying the safe_texture_manager and fixed .exe, I still got the error. I'm currently using 91.31 nvidia drivers on a BFG GeForce 7800 GS AGP video card.
Solution:
I started the game with Options->Video->Hardware Acceleration OFF. Then after playing for a second, I then went back to the menu and set hardware acceleration ON. Voila! Instant fix.
Playing for a minute with the software emulation mode reminded me of the first time I played the Thief demo on a 350 MHz Pentium computer without a video card. Now I remember why I bought a video card for that very first computer. (It is pretty ugly playing with software mode.)

It'll go in the FAQ if it's verified by a few more people. I shall try it out later or tomorrow to see if it helps.

I'd test this, but I don't get that error.
Totally unrelated, but this reminds me of when I though I'd solved my TG level-loading crash by turning off the z-buffer before playing, but couldn't do it right again. :(
Anyway, how about updating the FAQ with the fact that 93.71 drivers and Thief Gold don't get along, but 84.21 and TG do?

I'll test it tommorow - I've been trying to play Thief but I've been getting this problem (pretty much the same graphics card as you).

iv had that problem for ages now, but it was for thief DP. the FAQ solutions didnt work and i even posted but non of the kind replies worked :( maybe this will work for DP as well as gold :) thanks for posting, i will see if it works when i get the chance :)

I wouldn't consider this a solution. It only worked for me once. That's one try, not one mission. After that the problem continued. The problem is in newer video drivers, I haven't tried the most recent ones but I believe the only current viable solution is to roll back your video drivers.

Didn't work for me, either :erg:

Doesn't work for Thief 2, unfortunately. The FAQ solution doesn't work for me either.

Seems that it only works periodically. I can't replicate good results all the time. I rolled back my drivers to 84.21, and Thief works now, 100% of the time.
I tried doing a dual install of Win98 and XP, but it seems that Win98 won't recognize my SATA drive. Crap.
