Thief: You are a talented man. A man of few words, but a talented man. You live in a world filled with technology and dimensions. You start your day getting past a guard who likes beer. During your work you trusted an old man who told you to do something. You did it. That old man tricked you to do his dark project. By doing what that man asked you to do you created a chaotic situation. Now weird creatures are everywhere destroying things. You try to escape but you are caught and left to die. Luckily you manage to avoid death. People that mocked you must now rely on your skill to save the entire place by entering an alternative dimension. By defeating the boss of that dimension you stop the flow of weird creatures invading your world.
HL: Same thing.
--------------------------------------
Thief2: Time has passed. It´s the start of a new age. Things doesn´t look good for you. Security is getting tough. Then you get ambushed. Your only way out of that mess is to ally yourself with a beautiful woman and her group of crazy fanatic friends that fight for their freedom. It seems they all know you from your previous adventure. The man who is hunting you likes to transform human beings into horrid humanoids with the use of new technology. You invade the crazy man´s residence to save the woman you´re allied with and end this madness. Things doesn´t turn out the way you expected. The crazy man is untouchable, you can´t kill him directly. Whoever you manage to sabotage the crazy man´s machinery. The sabotage kills him.
HL2: Same thing.

The start and ending for half life seemed more like Thief II plot line for me.
Heheh.

Good comparison! However...
Thief: You lurk in the shadows, subtly avoiding conflict, interested in loot more than bloodshed. You climb around the dark noir city cunningly using rope arrows and don't like your name to be heard regardless of what you have done. You have been in a fair amount of horrid situations that involve undead infested catacombs, cathedrals and a haunted asylum, some times you hung from a beam or froze in a shadow, fearing for dear life.
HL: You go around wielding an RPG, shotgun, MP5 + Grenade Launcher and an array of lazers. The most you have done in climbing and sneaking is when you had nothing to kill things with rather than sneak past them (read, you had no crowbar). The most climbing you have done is up and down a ladder, to go shoot more things in the head. Your environment varies, and every one knows you as the "one free man", sort of like a romanticized messiah. The scariest place you have been is in a dark pipe somewhere (still clutching that 50,000 MW lazer) or in Ravensholm, which is light up brightly, has slow zombies coming at you which you have fun dismembering with saw blades, and gives you an invulnerable ally in the end even at the maximum difficulty.
HL series are good games, I love them. But they are not Thief.

That's why it was "just for fun". I wonder how many famous stories fit those of Thief.

By that logic, Half-Life 3 will involve a traitor within Gordon's allies. Hmm... :weird:

Creepy characters
Thief: During your adventure you find a... sentient creature. There´s something clearly wrong with "it". It stands in the middle of chaos, almost ignoring the dangers of nearby monsters. Almost seems like that thing is the reason for all the craziness.
The worst part is that it notices you. Observes you. And talks to you in a weird creepy voice.
HL: Same thing.
---------------------------------------------
Cute weapons
Thief: A small cute tiny creature that moves towards your target, causing a messy result. Be aware that this creature can turn against yourself.
HL: Same thing.
---------------------------------------------
Best horror map
Thief: A part of the city that was suddenly decimated by a plague of zombies. Your only way to escape this place is with the help of a crazy old priest. The crazy old priest talks a lot of non-sense but in the end he helps you to escape. The priest seems to be relieved to find his end at the haunted cemetery.
HL: Same thing.
---------------------------------------------
Ugly creature award
Thief: A bipedal creature with a huge tail that shoots green acid from its mouth.
HL: Same thing.
---------------------------------------------
Most intense moment
Thief: Trying to escape a technological nightmare while solving puzzles and pushing buttons while a paranoid mastermind tries to observe you. Oh, the paranoid mastermind can´t stop talking. There is a special room filled with deadly turrets. There are cameras everywhere. And your companion was destroied.
Portal: Same thing.
