Technological advancement is the ultimate downfall of society. Well, the way it's been exploited. Sure, there are things, that rather make you smarter then dumber (Deeper music, Thief, really really great strategies), but they are completely too few.
People are too used to techno/club music and retarded movies or brainless shooter games, that their brains have been screwed and they get very lazy.
But seems like looking at the history there will always be terrible exploits for good things.
That was about sick, shallow society.
But it just seems like here, Thief is really meant for more mature and wiser people ect and dumber/diffrent type of people (smart people with diffrent interests) just stop playing this really quickly. Probably that made this community immortal.
I hope i said everything right, but i probably sound arrogant again, don't i. It's not arrogance, it's wisdom...
Also, hope i sound like a big enough smart-ass, since that's what i could probably be by definition.
well it's not arrogant (maybe just a bit ;) ) but you're generalizing things, judging them by what they appear to be. dumb people, wise people, techno bad, *insert here what you prefer* good, etc. thats why your overall conclusion have to be a pessimistic one. techno may be "brainless" or lowbrow, but this is how it's supposed to be. forget all your worries for a brief moment and just let yourself go: dance, cheer, jump, eventually kiss ;) this won't make you stupid. some good ol zombie flicks serve the same purpose.
my point is, try not to think in categories mentioned above cause people and circumstances are very often much more complex than they appear to be.
btw. technological advancement is inevitable. it's very likely that it will be used for destruction and terror but on the other hand it will also create more literate societies, which will oppose every further missuse and even allow us to create this important balance between utilization of renewable resources and satisfying human demands.

Alright, i guess what i tried to say is, that some people started techno, some followed and now so many of them hear it mostly because of company and herd instinct.
Well, i judge by what i see. (Ah, also i kinda do always think my opinion is the best or atleast one of the best. Not to be helped!) Ofcourse there are people listening to techno and are still somewhat okay. That's fine. But most of them are so foolish cause... well... hard to explain, but i'll guess it's just simpler to blame crowd/herd instinct. They lose opinions.
I know i've forgotten something again so feel free to bash me agains't a wall.
Circumstances are indeed a bitch. It's all about turning and staying on the right path...
I could've gotten lost with the retards, but my parents raised me diffrently (alot better imho) from them and i had the right friends. I consider myself very lucky. If i hadn't been a fan of Starwars (:D) when i was 7-12, i might've gotten lost and the knowledge parents gave me i might have spitted on. Well, it probably wouldn't be that bad, but i would probably be with nearly as low wisdom as others of my age.
Enough about that.
Let's cheer for christmas. :) Oh and - no christmas skin? Well it's ok, this one i never really liked and probably never will (probably cause it's so basic simple), but what the heck, light purple is still fine background.

When life gets me down, I love to just sit in my room in silence, and get sucked into the Thief Universe for a few hours.
With Garrett as my guide and the City as my playing field...anything's possible.
The same goes for any game or book for me really, but there's just something about Thief...the music? The unreal yet so real world? The challenges?
I don't know, but Thief is different than any other game I've played. And I love it! :)

now i don't want to sound like a smart-ass. it's just that i've also judged by what i saw, never bothered to dig deeper and observe circumstances from different point of views. if you're a teenager it's okay if you live in a bit more simple world, but at some point it's very helpful (and morally "healthy") to acquire new perspectives on things. todays world offers you a variety of easy accessable and different sources of information and education. a life as a cynical secluded "peoplehater", full of prejudices and by that open for every kind of manipulation didn't sound appealing to me, and in addition this would be a waste of opportunities ;)
btw. it's not my goal to bash anyone against the wall, but after learning about those eye openers during my years of study, i just had to post something. this is not a challenge to a duel, just some (offtopic-) thoughts of mine ;)

I heard what your saying, I am and a well balanced person, but getting the wind knocked out of ones self over and over(mum died, best friend died, then some other sh*t i wont go into) tends to wear a person down. But I can play a game of thief, get a nights sleep and Im ok :)
there is no other forum like this one, in fact I havent played a game or posted in a forum as long...
Well, that certainly explains things.:o You have my deepest sympathies, biker. Glad you have at least one thing to cheer you up.

Oh I am so with you Biker.......Thief is my only release.....:)
After living a totally active wonderful free life with husband and daughter, and in the mediteranean too!...we have been back in the UK for nearly 3 years, looking after my Mum 24/7 who is totally disabled, and has Altzeimers..Now I hardly leave the house as she needs total care....unless its to do the weekly shop for her...I am still living out of cardboard boxes...lol,as it hasnt quite sunk in yet that we are staying for long....but I expect it will be...It has virtually destroyed my 20 year marriage...(he is an alcoholic but HE doesnt know it yet)...lol..and because of how things are ATM I feel less inclined to overlook his habit and because I have no escape its slowly destroying me too now,I can actually feel life passing me by......although I know nothing lasts forever..and hopefully one day I can pick up the pieces and fly again.
So thief is a wonderous thing for me now,and always will be ......
And No I am not looking forward to Christmas....everyday is the same to me now.

For me, it's not necessarily Thief that gives me a temporary escape from the real world, there are some other things as well. Most of these are things I do alone - walking through the woods alone, reading a book, playing some computer game, and so on.
Some people think I should do what they prefer to do. Or that I should not even try to escape reality, because it does not help (which is wrong, a temporary escape lets me cool down if I'm about to explode, lets me get less stressed again, etc.). Well, I don't care much for what they say any longer, because they won't listen either when I tell them that this helps me or that I enjoy these things.
The world today has many challenges, and you cannot always win. You cannot even always try to win, then try again, and a third time, and so on. Sometimes, you're just tired or just fed up with everything. And then it's time for some time off, some recreation, and maybe some entertainment.
But the things which provide recreation and entertainment are not defined by other people, but by the one who needs recreation. If others do not understand that, so be it. I have stopped to discuss that with people; these who discuss it usually won't stop until you adopt every bit of their behaviour regarding recreation and entertainment.
And I'm not going to become a mindless copy of them. What I enjoy, I enjoy (when I find time for it and when I don't hurt anyone else too much when doing it). Period.
So, bikerdude, if playing Thief cheers you up, just do it. It helps you rebuilding your strength for the times when you have to face reality again, and these times will certainly come again.

*nodding along with damn near every word from JonesCrusher*
... that is an awful feeling; the feeling that life is passing you by while you spin your wheels, stuck in the mud, unable to get traction because somehow you took an unknowingly wrong-turn. But, I guess that's what life is about, all of these wonderful and awful experiences--elation one moment, defeat the next. Apparently it'd be boring otherwise.
I guess that's what I love about Thief--the world is different, and it's all there for exploring.
