I absolutely agree with you, jay pettitt.
The best thing would be to have a brend new (unknown) thief as main character for Thief4 , possibly starting a new parallel storyline which shares only setting and general background with older Thief games.
FAIL. Thief series are only about Garrett. If there's not Garrett, we might aswell call it a fan mission/fan campaign/fan campaign.
I'm confident, that the line is too badly screwed up to even have hope for a great Thief IV storyline. Although my wish is similiar to jay pettitt's

Best idea yet:
The City faces the same fate as the precursor city and is threatened with sinking beneath the earth. You go do stuff to prevent this, as well as JOURNEY TO OTHER CITIES TO STOP THEM FROM CAPITALIZING ON THE SITUATION!
Seriously, we need an OM that takes you outside the city.

You mean, like "Trail of Blood", or Markham's Isle?
Seriously, though, it's as if you wanted a game set during WW2 to take place on the Moon. The City is Thief's whole universe. Since Garrett's storyline has kind of ended, now would be good a moment for a major change of paradigm, but I doubt changing the City for something else would be the best choice possible.

I'd like some sort of lookback to the Mechanists, i hate how they were almost just forgotten about in T3.

The ruins of Soulforge... :)
"...turn thine eye only to the ruin of Soulforge, where the Builder himself smote down the workings of the heretic Karras and his wicked crafts."
In a cutscene, in distant art, bring back the briefings.
What became of Angelwatch?

Yeh! Something like "Return to Soulforge" or "Angelwatch Revisited". I'm not saying bring the Mechanists back, that's quite fanboyish. Just sneaking around a ruined Mechanist complex would be ace, discovering Karras' previously unknown diabolical toys, or unearthing his true legacy...

Good question Jtr7. A better question is: Why is Soulforge destroyed. The "servants" and the gas destroy Carbon based matter. Soulforge, with the exception of the servants and Karras is all steel and stone.
The "detonation" of the servants within the confines did in Karras and any other fleshy body, but not the building itself.
Confined within the "sealed" fortress of Soulforge, the gas would work its "magic" and, assuming a reasonable period for it to dissapate, Soulforge itself and all exterior buildings, including Angelwatch would still stand. Karras' minions in Angelwatch would be able to continue his Mechanistic principles and assaults against the Hammerites, Pagans and other non-believers.
As for T4, Garrett is at a major crossroad, or as my sociologist teacher would say, "an emotionally significant event" has occured. Garrett is faced with a major decision regarding how to live his life.
Does he continue to be a self-centered freelance thief?
Garrett is now THE KEEPER.
Does he assume that role and continue to attempt to maintain the balance of good and evil?
Does he do that as an individual?
Does he train the girl to take his active place and become a "Spy Master" using her on single missions, or does he re-establish the Keepers and manage them by using an existing cadre, or recruit and train new operatives?
Considering the entire story, the passage of time, and Garretts age, continuation of the story with him the prime active agent seems a little unrealistic. (Yeah, the entire story is unrealistic, but within the confines of the game line, to keep him the primary protagonist and "hero" is "unrealistic").
I'd prefer some intermediate tales strung together, or failing that, a prequel that addressed his activities after he left the Keepers and before the incident of confronting the Woodsie Lord. Or something dealing with life after Soulforge and before T3.

I can't remember hammer symbols there, I do however remember a giant cog.
