That map proves nothing. I don't think the Pagans care much about the schism, to them the Mechanists are just Hammers too. Oh, and the symbol on the map is a cog too.

ShadowSneaker's correct. The Hammers used and created gears, and boilers, too, but they were not holy symbols. They accused the Mechanists of shunning the Hammer, and thus, shunning the Builder. The Hammerites believe the hammer was the technology that allowed them to forge a new way of life outside the pagan lifestyle. There are gears all over TDP/Gold, including the use of gears as a motif. Machinery, stonework, and craftsmenship make up the Hammer motif, while the hammer is the most holy.
And you are correct that the pagans don't see the schism. In TMA they used the term "Mechanist", but never in TDS, where they just call them variations of "Hammer", like "hammerhead". They even believe Hammers killed Viktoria.
