Shadak asks some very relevant questions. I'm looking forward to read your answers.
I'd like to draw your attention to the Thief-like background material created for (
http://www.thedarkmod.com/) The Dark Mod, too. You can read about that universe (
http://modetwo.net/darkmod/wiki/index.php/Universe) here. And it's a pretty safe bet that nonprofit, personal use of
that universe won't get you sued.

Are you talking about making a "indie" or "garage" computer game?
Bullseye! ;)
I had an Idea for a Half-Life 2 Mod, that takes place in well-known Thief's universe. However, I will probably follow Digital Nightfall's advice and make my own steampunk world, with some hidden allusions to the Thief series.

Seems I'm not the first with such idea ;)
I have to admit that I haven't known about Dark Mod project (only heard something about Circle of stone and shadow).
I watched a video on youtube today, and I must say that DM looks awesome. Congrats:)
Magpie, thx for the link. Now I should reconsider some of my ideas. Cheers!

A whole game? 3D FPP (because it's a mod for Half-Life 2)? You will need to be very careful with that. Don't take me wrong, this sounds like an exciting initiative, but making of a whole new game with its own world and (presumably) mechanics is... a complex task, to put it mildly. For instance, you won't find too many medieval steampunk assets within Half-Life 2. You will need to make them by yourself, or ask someone to help you (or use a different framework, such as Dark Mod when it's released).

Indeed. The Dark Mod has a whole team working on it, and their first Beta is expected at the end of this year, about 4 years after they started. Are you seriously planning on doing this by yourself in less than a decade?
Swashbuckler' on 26/2/2008 at 06:33
Well, I know that making a new game/mod means a lot of hard work. It's impossible to finish it single-handedly in less than 10 years, as you said.
I'm gathering a team and so far I've got 6 guys.
Cheers

Don't start with gathering a team. That's how all these projects fail. Instead, start with preparing a design for your mod. What you really need at this moment is a clear vision of what you want to achieve and what it will cost you. Without those, your team will fall apart sooner than you expect.

Having been with The Dark Mod since the beginning, I can tell you that what you're suggesting is a *hell* of a lot of work. In the 3+ years since TDM began, I've logged an average of at least 4-5 hours a week on the project, which adds up to somewhere in the vicinity of 800 hours of (unpaid) work so far. And that's just me--one person in a group of about a dozen regulars.
It also seems kind of strange to want to start such a project, when something very similar (thief-like setting in a modern engine) already exists.
If you're at all serious, you need to sit down and think very carefully about what you really want to accomplish.

You're probably right, I guess.
Need to reconsider my project seriously. Maybe I'll try something... different?

That's piece of good advice:)
Thanks a lot. Now I need to sit and peacefully think about my project.
Cheers!

I suggest you seriously think about turning that passion for Thief into something you can contribute to Dark Mod. See, the whole Thieving community has been watching and waiting for this, with full support. Don't you want to be a part of it?
