It's not any steampunk at all. Steampunk denotes a world with lots of steam-powered technology. It's not even metaphorical steampunk, if you're thinking of the juxtaposition of 50s tech with advanced alien tech, because it was an intentional, artificial disparity.
it's less steampunk, and more film noir.
any thief movie would HAVE to be film noir. there's too many distinctive shadows and garrett voiceovers for it not to be. not to mention the gratuitious use of art deco in TMA. TMA had a very flashy, 1920s/1930s feel to it at times. it kind of bothers me that DS dropped that; they make mention of karras, yes, but you'd think there'd be remnants left over. however, the museum is close enough; so's the cradle, for all its creepy 1930s insane asylum atmosphere. "hello, i am dr. sandbridge, and i'll be your alienist for this evening..."

Sleepy Hollow.
How cool would Thief be with a headless horseman?
ZylonBane on 5/2/2006 at 19:22
Stupid cool.
Oh wait, no, just stupid.

Yeah, but the setting and thematic aspects of it fit in: the brooding borderlands of early 19th Cent. New England; America's blossoming culture / "civilization" on the edges of (what was still then) the dark, savage forests. Untapped potential there. And horses period in Thief would be serious-cool.

I dunno. I can't picture Garrett outside his dense urban environment. Well okay, I can, since I've played some FMs that put him out in the countryside... and it never feels right.

what about trail of blood? or cragscleft? or precious cargo?
ZylonBane on 6/2/2006 at 22:18
Very little of Cragscleft took place outside the prison and mine enviroment.
Trail of Blood and Precious Cargo... not my favorites.

Dark City has a great overall atmosphere, although it is nothing like Thief in any other aspect. The City of Lost Children is a great movie (possibly my favourite one ever) and is very much Thief-like in its atmosphere. Delicatessen is just more of the same stuff, but a bit more surreal. Of course, Vidocq is also great inspiration. I would also recommend the semi-old Beowulf movie where you have stuff like steampowered armors and such. It is probably the closest to a Thief-setting I've seen in a movie. They even have gas torches.
For a different take, try on Oliver Twist. It has thieves and pictures a pretty harsh world. One could also use Frankenstein as inspiration, it is dark and features some technology. For an adventure outside the City, Brotherhood of the Wolf is pretty thief-ish at times and feature a kind of pagans. You might also want to take a look at Gotham City in the first two Batman movies by Tim Burton. Also go for Det sjunde inseglet from Sweden wich is really dark and nice. Oh, and Sin City deliveres quite a good view of what life in the underworld can be like.
If you really want something that goes along the lines of Thief, look up some anime. There are lots of anime movies that picture steampunk and thief-ish themes as well as pagan ones.
On the other hand, comics have more stuff to become inspired by, but this thread is for movies so I'll shut up now.
(Almost. I just have to say that my friend said that Babylon 5 and Xena was good inspiration. I have to kill him now, even though he only was kidding.)

The French short La Jetee and Terry Gilliam's 12 Monkeys was based on the French short have a Thief-ish feel. Or maybe it is vise versa.
Not the plots be the cinematograghy and editing techniques.

You mentioned some comics Szandor? Got any names? I'm not really a CBG, but I enjoy a few comics here and there and if you knew some comics Thief-plot/Thief-feel, I'd appreciate a link.
Thanks :-)
