Memorable ambient sounds from Thief? How about...

I thought the video looked pretty great myself, and I'm now kinda tempted to pick it up on release day. The one thing that did concern me Specter already brought up: those climbable fences you see hanging around everywhere seem too much like a CLIMB HERE sign, and might take some of the fun of exploration out of the game. But there were more than a few places where Garrett climbed up on something I'd expect to be climbable that weren't otherwise marked, so it might not be all that bad.

Seriously, the Thiaf devs must be on your wavelength, it would explain a whole lot...

Damn, joke's on me!
edit: However, still not an ambient sound. Enemies don't count.

Close. I was talking about the squawk box just outside the Haunted Cathedral.
Whether we love the game or not, I do think all of us here will miss Eric Brosius' weird soundscapes. They were a major part of what made Thief Thief. And while I wouldn't say nuThief sounds bad exactly, it does make the game feel a little less like home.

You just need to understand Renzatic. Deep down inside, he is a fanatic of true classic gaming, like us. Unfortunately, his contract with the bad guys hasnt expired yet, and is conflicted, so he tends to ride the fence a lot, occassionally lobbing a pot shot or two on us good guys.

I'd say the biggest difference between me and you is a matter of perspective. I always expected nuThief is an entirely new game by an entirely new team, using the same source material to create their own version of Garrett and The City. Because of that, all the new changes and little discrepancies we've seen never bothered me as much as the people expecting a straight up Thief 4.
Plus, new gameplay trends tend not to bother me all that much. Even if some things are a little more fluid and automatic than they used to be, as long as the game ends up being an actual challenge on par with the originals, I'm fine with them. I don't mind that parts of the game are different than what I expected, or the controls and gameplay aren't quite the same, so long as the end result makes for a good game. That's all that matters to me.
It's not old Thief. We'll never have old Thief. Those days have long since come and gone. Why wail and gnash your teeth about something you can't change when nuThief might very well be its own good thing in its own special way?

I actually watched the entire thing with my headphones on and I'd have to say this is the best video they've released so far.
Positive
This attempt at creating a Thief game looks visually the part minus some of the fantastical (tesla technology). Improvements have been made from the original games in the department of animations such as the feeling of weight after landing from a jump and the slight twist of your fingers during lock picking although there are also some very bad ones. This was a natural step forward I was expecting from a title in this day and age. AI was alert after extinguishing torches which I think was good.
Negative
The Mass Effect track toward the end felt very out of place but was probably their attempt at replacing LGS industrial rock although the use of this music will probably be overused for "exciting" things that are happening in the game to get you pumped up.
The shrowd is less obtrusive than before but the flashing white and darkened frame of the screen is definitely completely unnecessary for a veteran Thief player. Why is this not an option for old school mode?
The herky jerky camera during loot swipes is distracting and obnoxious. Hope no one playing gets motion sickness.
Voice acting is absolutely horrendous. Garrett still sounds mundane and forgetful and the other voice acting is extremely amateurish. There doesn't seem to be any Dan Thron's or Stephen Russell's attached to this project. The thief taker general from a different video was among the most amateurish and over the top VA I've heard. You know that feeling when someone does something dumb or something is so bad that you feel embarrassed? I've been getting a lot of that hearing the VA and seeing the marketing departments work for this game.
I suspected years ago that this new sequel would surpass TDS slimming down of player feedback in the sound department because I believed the casual gamer of today would not be able to learn the subtlety of noise in the amount of time they require to adapt to the gameplay before they start demanding "win". It sounds like I was right. Garrett moves silently on all surfaces. Towards the end at 16:30 after extinguishing the torch Garrett runs and begins parkouring. This was all done silently from the second he starts running and the first noise made wasn't until he grapples. After that he runs on top of wooden ledgings and leaps onto the side of a house as silent as a mouse including landings. The only feedback I noticed was the creaking of floorboards but I don't know if that actually generates a response from AI because he was making that whole building creak but no one was alerted. Only a play through from someone that really understands the incredibly important sound feedback in the original two games will be able to determine the extent of the damage in this gameplay mechanic from Thief.
Once on the EM boards I voiced my displeasure with how the game was shaping and one of the mods asked me if it wasn't important to me that Thief gain new players. To that I would say yes but not at the expense of the game itself where it is regressing and not advancing just for the sake of gaining casual gamer Snuffy who wants to "win" within 10 minutes of picking up and playing. I don't want those gamers shaping my favorite franchise because for me the Thief games are the most important piece of entertainment I've stumbled upon.
As it stands the things that attracted me to Thief have either been eliminated or greatly diminished due to the nature of this being a reboot and the fact that this is a triple A title that requires an immense number of sales. Sound, player movement, the character of Garrett, lore ect have all been affected negatively as a result. I'll have to wait for a review of game from someone on here that I trust to see if I pick it up a few years from now in the bargain bin just for the sake that this game is visually stimulating.

Absolutely correct and I think that is the source for the displeasure at least for me. Those that wanted a Thief game and those that wanted a direct Thief sequel in some manner as hinted at for years (THI4F). I can see the potential for this game so clearly if only it were a direct sequel with all gameplay mechanics intact and built upon with some new stuff thrown in. Maybe after a few years of the game being released I can let it go and just play a decent game. I've played plenty of decent games that were entertaining. :erg:
