Here's a tidbit of trivia. Thief was mentioned in passing in the latest issue of PC Gamer magazine February 2009:Issue 184, page 84. The article is from the head of Monolith, Rick Ellis. I can't find a link to said article, so I'll quote the relevant part...
"When we do our jobs well, you forget that you are playing a game, and the events in it feel very real and matter to you. I first felt this playing DOOM and Thief. The tension of sneaking around and being jumped by a zombie, or being seen by a guard was startling. Shotgunning demons (even if they were sprites) in DOOM was nothing short of nightmarish. These experiences stick with me even today and are constant reminders that this is what 'games' are all about: immersion, escapism, and creating emotional believability."
If you want the rest of the article, you'll have to buy an issue. :p
Just thought this tidbit might be of interest to the community.

I don't know about you, but I never found shotgunning demons in Doom to be very immersive- but at least it didn't give me as much motion sickness as Wolfenstein 3D did.
And I never get motion sickness.

It could have been that I was not much more than a mere stripling at the time, but it scared the shit out of me. I think it was the addition of idle sounds that did it... and the sometimes impenetrable darkness. I still think Doom has a great look to it today, the way that the colours gradually thin out to monochrome in the darkness.
Thief was one of the most immersive games I've ever played. Sneaking as a game mechanic draws me in like nothing else - the requirements of perception, planning and tight timing married to your combat impotence should any of those fail is a potent mix.

True, and Wolf 3D scared me as a kid.
