I believe it cannot have been downloadable. It must have been a link to a server somewhere, otherwise I wouldn't know how they could claim it to be compatible with all WAP 1.1-enabled phones:
(
http://web.archive.org/web/20041019095615/http://iomo.co.uk/press/011012thief.shtml)
Whether the link would be provided by selling a password or by sending a service message to the handset, or maybe it even was a free game I don't know.
Maybe we should ask this guy (quoted from the press release):
Simon Protheroe, Eidos' Technical director says: "With our strong catalogue of well established titles we are ideally positioned to provide content for WAP services. We are very pleased with iomo's WAP interpretation of Thief and believe that it will further enhance the franchise."
Enhancing the franchise? Really?
Hey, great names list, btw. Haven't looked it over, but it's cool. Even Edgar is in it!

Running an emulator of the TDS Mobile game would enable us to get a much better look at the maps and locations contained in the game. The maps themselves are strictly 2D, as is only natural. The thing is, while fiddling around with screenshots and fraps and puzzling the graphics together, one could be tempted to actually write a larger game guide.
Which would be awfully time-consuming. At least for me.
(Ooo. What if the room layout in the 2D maps actually made sense, like... I dunno, like the compass in U.S.Gold's Heroes of the Lance / Dragons of Flame action games? Or better yet, like the castle rooms in Lucasarts' Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, where the north/south/west/east facing could change when Indy went through a doorway, but not necessarily my player perspective. If so, one could have a couple of new official locations more or less mapped out for the mapping project!)
Hmh. See what I mean? *pointing at above paragraph*

I don't know about cutscenes - each graphic could possibly be only goodies/player rewards for every Xth level cleared. I doubt if they were even animated, but still, one would be very disappointed as a player if there was no real sense of advancement in Constantine's mansion.
Also check out (
http://web.archive.org/web/20030227041714/www.iomo.co.uk/cgi-bin/site/web.pl?product:infiltrator:) that Infiltrator game. On an "Under Development" list, no less.
Now, I saw you're missing the third picture from your webpage screenshot. Nothing important, but (
http://web.archive.org/web/20020328033359/http://iomo.co.uk/iomo_website/products/released/thief/images/thief_grab3.gif) here it is. And here's (
http://web.archive.org/web/20020202214641/http://www.iomo.co.uk/cgi-bin/site/web.pl?product:thief:) the complete page.
Re. distro of Iomo's WAP games - On (
http://web.archive.org/web/20030406134057/www.iomo.co.uk/cgi-bin/site/web.pl?main) one page of products, note that Thief is under "Completed" products, "published" by Eidos.
That, together with (
http://web.archive.org/web/20030609234308/http://iomo.co.uk/iomo_website/products/distribution/distribution.htm) this page of distributors, led me to believe that cellular net providers could sell access to Iomo's games - licensers like Eidos could sell their own third-party developed titles, and even handset manufacturers like Nokia could grant exclusive access to their customers through their hardware. But the Thief title isn't in there.
So what happened to Constantine's Sword, then? Its URL contains the string "products/released" instead of "(
http://web.archive.org/web/20030613012436/http://iomo.co.uk/iomo_website/products/indevelopment/wap_games.htm) products/indevelopment". Yet it never seemed to have been distributed. Not that any of the other titles would likely be distributed at this point, either, I guess a lot of the partners have shut down their script-running servers now.
I don't know - my comfort despite the sparse info is that I can't imagine that the game would be very significant. Would Garrett meet any new enemies or obstacles we didn't know from The Sword? Nah, not in this game. Some of the artwork looked reasonably new, but.

Yeah. It just looks like nothing but icons. If it's a blank square, it's a piece of hallway. If it's a "$" it's loot. Et cetera. It's like a game I could make in AtariBasic with little or no machine code. Except for the little Garrett "photos".:p It would take a long time, indeed, to map it all out!

I made the images I've posted of it from pieces of different archived pages. Some would load, some would not. I couldn't get that third pic to show on any of the pages, even with right-clicking and choosing "Show Picture". Clicking the link you provided gave me four red x's, until I right-clicked each one, but at least the whole page
is there.

Well, in the first part of my last post I was actually referring to the TDS Mobile game when I spoke about mapping, not Constantine's Sword.

Whoopsie!:o
And unfortunately, I wouldn't be able to check it out unless it was made available in a format playable on PC.:(

Or if somebody mailed you a cellphone where it was installed?
j/k.

Heh heh. I'm afraid that would have to be the only way!:o
