My understanding of the South Park comment is that the movie used the exact same animation technique as the TV show, which is analagous to the Thief movie using the exact same animation technique as the game. The idea of animation vs live is not about action, it's about bringing Thief to life. If it's animated, we'll have a Bigger, Louder and Uncut on our hands.
P.S: If Thief is made my Rustmonkey, (
http://www.apple.com/trailers/miramax/sin_city.html) Sin City will obliterate it.

Uh, the point of the South Park comment is that South Park is also animated almost entirely by moving still images around.

that looks pretty good, need lights in the city though :)
re Rustmonkey and live action ... with a bigger budget I'm sure they could get around the limitations - for instance, using good, well animated 3d models (ie not like in the crappy game engine cutscenes). The most important thing is they would capture the atmosphere perfectly ... I wouldn't necessarily trust anyone else to 'get it'.

Well perhaps what would work is that a thief movie should use the same sort of approach as the game handled it. That is, your missions were the 'live action' (meaning you were playing) and the purely storyline parts were done with animation. The trouble with doing that would be trying to not confuse what character is which and also integrating the animation with the live action smoothly.

The Rustmonkey cutscenes in TDP were the best by far in my opinion. TMA's cutscenes never came close to that level of moodyness and dark steampunk, not to mention the voice acting and music. Yet they were good enough.
But TDS's cutscenes are the worst. They look so smooth and simplistic, really cartoon-like, wheras TDP was full of shadows, unevenness, details, and this strange overworldly look. TMA at least had some of that attention to detail and "real" darkness.
And then im not even mentioning Garrett's face and eye in some of the cutscenes in TDS. :eww:
The opinions above are in no way affected by the fact that I hold T1 highest, T2 below that, and T3 lowest!
I would love to have a Thief movie by Rustmonkey, but then she would have to be given nearly unlimited time and funding, as well as the old T1 tools, just refined a bit for todays use.
And then again, I would prefer a live-action cinema movie just as much, done correctly that is.
(And what do I mean by correctly? Well, I believe there are a couple of hundered posts regarding that subject in this thread already, so I won't bother voicing an opinion).

TDS's has IMHO, crisper picture and better animations.
Sorry, but they all looked cartoony to me, although the original games seemed to strive for a more realistic design than TDS.
Don't recall seeing garrett's eye in the cutscenes too much. Can't comment on that.

I don't know. The actual animated parts look good but some of the live action looks kinda cheesy in that trailer.
