Well, I started the Haunted Cathedral today.
Started out in the open. There's a work note on the ground, but I'd rather keep the lights on for now. A bit of exploring finds some tunnels, which I explore. I have a run-in with some Burricks, and since I can't shoot them while knee-deep in water, I have to run all the way back to solid land to kill them. Once that is done, I slowly emerge from the tunnels...
Oh look. Zombies everywhere.
Can't sneak, really.
So I run. Past barred gates, past barred doors, straight into a moat. Following the current along, I come to a tunnel, which takes me to a large room.
Ah. Looks like Disney has taken some 'inspiration' for those godawful Pirates of the Caribbean movies.
Five arrows later, and I've bagged the crawfish-man. There's a key, and a door. Since the key does not open the door, I figure it must be valuable later on.
Oh look. More zombies.
More running.
Along empty streets, loopholes, and straight into a small ditch leading to an underground construction.
Oh look. Spiders.
Kill them, continue...
Oh look. Flaming people.
I fired a water arrow at him, and watched him recoil.
I fired another, and he seemed to stand up straight.
I fired another, which passed through him, and then he ran into me and then through me at 60mph. Gave me quite a jolt. Bug, perhaps?
Back to street level... more zombies. Right now I'm in a structure with a chest and a few loopholes, and there's zombies roaming outside. I'd better go find that Cathedral.

Go back to the room with the Fire Shadow (flaming dude). Look on the ground. Before he fled, he dropped something. He should be back now, though. What happened was no bug, but the generally non-hostile Fire Shadow fleeing from your attacks. Keeps you from wasting anymore water arrows, too.
There's a Fire Shadow in the Bonehoard, as well. He was put into Thief Gold to give suicidally-wasteful players another chance to complete the missions, because you need them for specific puzzles, and too many people were breaking the missions shooting too many arrows. Another lesson in finding a reason to hoard equipment until an item is necessary to use. But you are in a perfect position to experiment and learn.

Well, he did drop a fire arrow, which I picked up. Are they really non-hostile?

Interesting. Thanks for the advice.

Non-hostile in that they are only protecting their "lair" and really don't make a point of treating you like an enemy the way the other AI in the mission do.
I'm not sure if it will react to your presence differently if you have a weapon drawn or put away, like the human AI sometimes do. Not much is known about the Fire Shadows, but I hope to have that rectified someday.

Despite my dislike of undead, this was my favourite mission and I've played it several times, but I don't remember a fire-shadow. Is it only on particular levels? Or maybe only the TG version?

I think it's Gold-only.
Thanks for the info.

I remembered the fireshadow as the earliest ingame testimony of having thief gold (I don't have it, so in the bonehoard I never met it).
The Fireshadow is indeed, Gold only.
(as on a side note, I'm on a quest for buying thief gold)

I think I probably skipped through the other missions when I bought TG - at that time I just wanted to play the 3 that aren't on TDP.
@AriesNoir -I only know of a windows 95/98 unfortunately - if that's what you meant.

You and I have similar histories with thief, catbarf. I used to watch my dad play the demos back in 1998 when I was 8 years old. I never wanted to play it either. Scared the crap outta me as a kid. But when you get older you feel less frightened by it.

And the thing is, zombies have stopped scaring me since I realized that far too often,
I am the hunter. The biggest part of the archetypal 'fear of monsters' is the knowledge that they see you, but you don't see them. In Thief, I know that any creature lurking in the shadows either can't see me and will probably loudly announce its presence long before it becomes a threat.
