Right now, it's in the Programs(x86) folder.
Assuming you're running Vista or Win7, that can be a problem since GL may not have the permissions it needs to do stuff with files. You might try installing it outside that like in C:\Thief\Garrettloader or anywhere outside either Program Files folders. I don't think it needs to be right there in the Thief folder but i could be wrong since I don't use GL.

It looks good. Thanks everyone for your assistance.
For anyone who cares, playing Thief through Steam is pretty easy. My problems were minor. I didn't have to do anything to Thief itself. Garrettloader 1.41 had to be installed first, followed with the beta release 1.42
For the technocrats....
My platform is Windows 7, 64 bit
NVidia GeForce GTX 260
8.17.13.142 (driver version)
I've only played for a short period of time. If I encounter any issues, I'll post them here.

I'll echo what Yandros said. In Windows Vista and Windows 7, neither Thief nor Garrettloader work correctly when installed in the Program Files folder. If you still have it there and you're not having any problems, great. But if you start to experience problems, I suggest you move it somewhere else such as C:\Games\Garrettloader for example.

Do I have control where Thief is placed when it's installed by Steam ?
However, I take your point on Garrettloader. If I come across any problems, I'll reinstall it in the same folder as Thief
ie) Program Files(x86) \ Steam \ steamapps \ common \ thief_2
btw...I haven't attempted ThiefGold or Thief3 yet. Another day.

You have control where Steam is placing its games. For example, I placed it to D:\Games\steamapps. I don't know if there's a tool to move that folder without having to reinstall all your steam games though.

Sounds like it could get messy DJ. I think I'll leave it alone unless or until I'm forced to. As of now, the irritating pop up window informing me that a program is going to make a change to "this computer" is pretty simple to click away.

I've been playing both Thief 2 & Thief Gold through Steam using Garrettloader for about a week now.
It appears to be totally stable. I haven't encountered any issues to speak of. I DID reinstall Garrettloader outside of the C Drive (which is an SSD drive) and placed it within the hard drive that contains my Thief FM's. But I left Steam where it was (within C Drive).
I haven't tried Deadly Shadows yet.

I should note that right now, Deadly Shadows is 75 persent off on Steam, just for today. And a bit of tomorrow.

The problem isn't Steam, the problem is your computer.
