Desktop icons mess up when your desktop resolution changes. It's not a problem of steam, it's a problem of the game itself. You don't have to download updates if you have switched it to offline mode. Speaking of Thief1 and Thief 2, they are completely independent and can be started without Steam application involved at all after first run and TFix or Tafferpatcher applied.

They're also both available from GoG if you don't like Steam.

Does it support Surround Sound in OpenAl? I know thief requires DirectSound and OpenAl is the standard now. I know about Alchemy
