I'm not sure if this is a groundbreaking new information, but I've just discovered that WineBottler can run Thief 1, even in (at last!!) hardware accelerated DirectX mode (both nVidia and GMA chipsets are tested). The movies dir must be deleted.

On OS X, CPU cores can be disabled (Thief still needs this) with /Developer/Extras/PreferencePanes/Processor.prefPane, available in the freely downloadable (after a quick Apple ID registration) XCode 3.

No success with Thief 2 yet, errors out on start.

EDIT: Thief 2 needed its more aggressive CD check patched out.

Thanks. Well, at least I have more resolution, and don't have to pay for CrossOver.
