I have a mate who, everytime I see him and the subject of Thief is brought up, reckons that it started on the Amiga.

All he is going on is the fact that he has seen a screenshot or image of what he said looked like an Iron Beast from Thief 2, in an Amiga magazine that he had. He has since conveniently thrown the magazine out, but he's obviously got no reason to lie about it.

When I pressed him further he admitted that he wasn't 100% sure if it was a Thief game now, but it's interesting nonetheless.

I've done some research and can't find anything to confirm that any rendition of Thief started on the Amiga.

Has anyone got any idea what the game might have been?

LGS was formed by people straight out of MIT around the time the PC had already won -- most of them probably never worked in a game industry then dominated by Commodore and Atari computers. In addition to that, the steampunk influences didn't come to Thief until some time into the development, maybe not even until early 1997, so there is very little chance that any part of the design of Thief started on the Amiga.

That being said, it's possible that your friend saw concept art for an Amiga game that did look like an Iron Beast, after all the mechanical walker with a human mask/face is almost a staple of steampunk, a genre that already existed at the time. Just look at The Chaos Engine.

I havent played with WinUae for over a year now and it looks we finally have PPC emulation BLIMEY!!! The dev said he would never do it, this is a major milestone!!!! so Amiga OS 4.1 yeah!

- SCSI CD READ CD command only worked if audio track was first track of CD.
- Hard reset didn't reset map rom loaded KS ROM data.
- AGA sprites in borders were clipped incorrectly in some situations (2.8.0)
- Autofire always on mode crashed.
- PCMCIA IDE emulation was broken long time ago.
- uanet.device + slirp combination was unusable.
- Directory filesystem statesave support open file path handling fixed.
- AVI audio recording always used PCM mode.

And much more small updates and fixes.

It's too bad the Amiga didn't 'win'. A pre-emptive multitasking system, in the 1980's. I had an Amiga 500, then upgraded to the 3000. By then, the market was miniscule here in the USA for anything Amiga related. I then sold out to the 'IBM compatible' systems...
