(
http://portableapps.com/) PortableApps could do it. You'd have to do some registry finagling with the NSIS script but it's quite doable. Not all that hard.
Biggest issue would be that you couldn't really release it b/c you can't go around giving thief away. Maybe a batch file to do it for you? I dunno.
We already know how to make thief portable. Also, Portableapps is a company/group which modifies open source software so that it's smaller. It doesn't make closed source games portable. :p

Not really. The purpose is to make it portable - no registry entries, etc. to tie a program down so it CAN be run off of a USB drive. I meant use the PortableApps platform to do it yourself. The platform can be used to make pretty much anything, not just open source stuff, portable, with a little work. It just wont show up on their website.
The problem with doing it with closed source software is that you can't legally distribute it. But, say you package the script used to portable-ize the game, and maybe a batch file to copy the files into the needed structure, and viola.

Well, let's wait for OPDE to come out, then modify it so that we can make the games footprint smaller, thus making it even more portable.
(Like make a converter that makes the textures a smaller size, audio compression, etc.)

Ummm... yeah. You might not want to hold your breath on that.

I'm hopeful, not certain, that in the near future, OPDE will get completed. The fact that the community alone has abandoned this much more plausible rebirth of the dark engine, is beyond my comprehension. In 5 years, the project went from being an bleak pipedream to a possible solution to our taffing legacy problems. I still doubt any LGS member will find the source code to the dark engine in their pants pocket or jersey jacket.
It's long gone, and no petitioning will find it.
period.

So, what about Thief on USB; have you tried it yet? :cheeky:

Have to say, I agree.

Eh, actually, not yet. But only because I've been a bit busy and I only plan on putting the idea in motion once it's absolutely necessary.
But, I guess I can just try and see if it works...
Yep, it works! Anyone know all the useless files within the thief 2 resources? Maybe it'll cut down, some?

Ah good, someone with a bit of sense. Sadly, the community focuses itself on finding long lost code, rather than stirring up support for real evidence of something just as good, an engine recreation.

(As the topic goes astray...)
People will and should devote their efforts as they wish. From the other-other side of the fence, I'd argue that we'd all benefit if more of the programming talent in the community came together under the new game that's already been released, taking the genre in new directions while staying true to the original, instead of attempting a complete and daunting rebuild of an old and already-beloved-as-it-is game. To each their own.

You clearly have not the slightest comprehension of how astoundingly complex the Dark Engine is. The probability of anyone being able to successfully reverse-engineer it is pretty close to zero. The best anyone can hope for on that front is a vaguely authentic simulation of the real thing.
