Better be naive than defaitist...
Well, I am just being realistic here. And... what are you up to with that dusty engine? The TDM guys are creating a similar environment, with graphics that would never be achievable with the old Thief engine. Is it a sentimental thing? Let go of it, and move on! Uhm... you will never get it, by the way. But that was probably already said on the first page.

Fixed that for you. Can't help it; I'm OC sometimes.
Impossible. If so, you have to write '
bump mapping' with '
p' a few times.

Hey DrK! Don't sweat it! I know too many Americans that can't speak/spell English properly, let alone speak/read & write another language.
I'm just far too anal sometimes! Thanks for being a good sport! :cheeky:

'k. As long as I don't have to say it more than five times in a row, fast. ;)

Okay, as you wish... If you don't believe in that petition, just ignore it instead of trying to demoralize us, naive people ;)
Indeed that's a sentimental thing, but most of all it's the fact that these material, if they still exist, will be lost if they are kept secret. LGS is dead, so do these material have to be dead too ? Consider it a fetish perhaps, the fans who want to get everything from LGS : is it so bad ? :)
And I TOTALLY DISAGREE when you say "that dusty engine" ! Have you already built a FM ? trust me, the Dark engine is not as dusty as you imagine ;)
Furthermore, the source codes will allow some taffers to improve the Dark engine :cheeky:

There is a problem with that line of reasoning. The number of people in the Thief community who are capable of developing and enhancing a 3D engine can probably be counted on the fingers of one hand, and most of them are already working on the Dark Mod (which, already, can do more or less everything the Dark engine can do, faster, better and with prettier graphics).
Releasing the Dark source code will not magically result in a super-extraordinary stealth engine; the most likely result is that the few developers who are interested will take a look, realise that it is outdated and no match for current engines which they can already work with, and lose interest.

That's not really what I meant... The source codes will allow improvements, but they are not a necessity. I don't know how to write what I'm thinking : this is not "source codes = forced improvements", it's more like "source codes = possibility of improvements" ;) . If someone would want to look at them, at least he could do it.
I don't expect a Dark engine 2 neither :p

The best way to get some signatures fast is to put same naked girls on the page. :)
Or you can use a MAKE SIGNATURE FAST$$$ scheme. :)

Well, quite honestly (as one of those people who can work on a 3d engine), I think this is a pretty useless endeavor. I think it'd be cool to be able to modernize the Dark Engine a bit but in-house developed engines tend to be very sloppy and hacked together and I doubt it'd be very easy to even make small changes without messing something up.
Now, a better idea would be to modify one of the current open source engines (irrlicht, ogre) to have toggle-able lightmaps so you could have the same features as the Dark Engine without the sloppy code.
That said if you can get it more power to you, since at the least it'd be a good idea to future proof it from MS updates that would make it impossible to run, etc.
