Forgive me, I am used to Thief and while I have some SS2 experience and the interface of this game is somewhat familiar, I am still a little confused. I am used to the compass that comes with Thief, so when I need to go in a certain direction in Deus Ex, I am not sure how to proceed. If something is located in the Northeast, how do I know how to proceed in that direction? Is there a compass somewhere that I don't know about? I have a horrible sense of direction anyway (in games and rl) and any help would be appreciated.
I searched here and in the hints section for 'compass' and 'direction' with no luck. I didn't want to read too much as I am trying to proceed through this game without any spoilers ruining things for me. I knew too much about Thief going into the game and I want this game to be different. BTW, I am on level 3.

In the upper-left corner of the screen, right by your health and bio-energy meters, is the compass. Whatever direction that's showing in the center of the band is the direction you're facing. Looks kinda like this:
___________________________
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | |
|||||||||||||| ||||||||||||||
|_____NW______N_______NE____|
As you turn, the directional markers turn with you in order to indicate your current...well, direction. In this case you'd be facing north. If you turned 45 degrees to the left, you'd be facing NW, and that's what would show in the center of the compass.
Don't know if this helps, or if I've just confused you more. Either way, good luck and have fun.

Well, that didn't turn out nearly as well as it did when it typed it, but I hope it's still helpful.
Rats.

Actually that does help. I thought that is what it could be, but it is so small that I have trouble reading it - maybe I will bump up the resolution or get glasses!
Thanks

Actually it would be interesting to know how the nanocompas works. Does JC have a magnetic gauge in his forehead or something?

Actually, you know what I must have done is hit the / key at some point and toggled off the compass. When I went back into the game and did not see the compass, I figured out that I must have toggled it off at some point - probably when desperately trying to do something else (reload or run).
Now I at least know what direction I am headed! Back to Hells Kitchen.
