Im just wondering, when I search for any of these things on google, of course the word thief in itself is so ambiguous its hard to find any relevant info.
Are there any kind of alternate engines which can make thief games run better on modern OS's? Or is anyone working on anything like this?
I have an old PC setup with ATI 1900, one of the last cards which ran thief games correctly (with the correct fog/weather effects and such), in other words one of the last setups you could have which runs thief/thief 2 exactly as they were meant to be ran. But now im curious, as i still go back to playing thief on my old backup PC sometimes, if there is any new hope of making them run correctly on modern hardware? There must be some works into wrappers or, i have no idea whats possible out there without the game's source code actually being released, what kind of work-around methods are possible especially on today's fast hardware?
So if you have any insight into current projects, anything related and helpful, please tell. My goal is to have the game running correctly on my living room system which is Core2Duo 3ghz, 8800gtx, 3gig ddr2, hooked up to a widescreen hdtv and auzentech 7.1 soundcard to convert all sounds to digital home theater output.
Such a shame I cant get the game to run as it was meant on this system and gotta play it on an older ati 1900 system... the best i can do here is have the game running with certain errors like the water textures moving too fast, gameplay 'speed' doesnt seem natural (even with special settings to make it run at "correct speed") it just doesnt have the correct feeling and pace of how it runs on my older system. at least i have 5.1 sound which is great around the room. Also no way to get it on any widescreen modes even using hacks (many old games from 98-2002 have hack methods to make them widescreen), nothing exists to do that in thief so I have to switch the TV to 4:3 aspect. These are the things im mainly hoping to find work-arounds, hacks, or new 'ports' for. Thanks for any help :/

Thanks, I signed the petition, no idea why Square Enix of all were interested in the franchise as their games are nothing similar to the style. But that kind of saddens me they own it, they probably don't care about the fans or the game and will just sit on the source for no reason.
The resolution patch is amazing (finally, widescreen!), thanks for that!
I downloaded a test beta of Open Dark Engine on their site, yet to test it though.

Cold0ne, how often do you read the forums?

Oh...

Yeah but I didnt know where to begin, what to search for exactly, and I didnt wanna start wading through pages of forum to possibly find what I wanted, when someone could have listed it who already knows :)
Also someone might come along like me and be looking for the same info and find my topic instead, and then have all the info there.

It can be done. I usually play on a Core 2 Duo 2.27 GHZ laptop with a Geforce 9800GTM graphics card and 4 gigs of RAM. I play in Linux though with Wine :).
DDFIX makes the graphics still look good IMO. I know there's that driver issue for NVidia cards in Windows, but that doesn't seem to occur in Linux. The only problems are:
A: I get no fog in T2.
B: I get no 3D sound.
I suppose if I miss 3d sound I can load it up on my old PC with the SB Live! card. I'm keeping this old sound card until it dies!

3D sound shouldnt be an issue in windows with any latest soundcards because I get both thief 1 and 2 playing with EAX hardware enabled in the game, so it works on my auzentech 7.1 and sounds glorious (upmixed to digital with this soundcard).
The fog issue, I got fog working in Thief 2 after using DDFix, but the only levels which use them seems to be Life of the Party and one more I cant remember. However the fog effect is way too strong, the night sky looks white, like daylight, but this is a known problem with the original game back in 2000 with video cards of that time.
Otherwise the game runs perfect for me now on modern PC. Including widescreen!
